Nitish Kumar Reddy received his maiden ODI cap from Rohit Sharma in Perth.

Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma made a bold prediction for all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, saying that the latter will become an all-format great in future. On Sunday, October 19, Reddy made his ODI debut during the first ODI between Australian Cricket Team and Indian Cricket Team at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Reddy received his maiden ODI cap by former Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who was replaced in the role by Shubman Gill ahead of India’s tour of Australia 2025. Ahead of the encounter that India lost by seven wickets, Reddy received the cap in the presence of other teammates and coach Gautam Gambhir

Interestingly, Reddy also made his test debut at the same venue last year in November during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, where he received his maiden test cap by Virat Kohli. He earned his maiden ODI call-up ahead of India’s tour of Australia 2025, and was included in the XI in the opening ODI game as the Men in Blue went ahead with three all-rounders in the match.

While giving Nitish his maiden ODI cap, Rohit shared some inspirational words for the young all-rounder and heaped praise on him for his successful journey with the Indian Cricket Team so far. During the ceremony, Rohit said he believes that Reddy would become an all-format great in future and would go a long way in his cricketing journey.

“Cap number 260, Nitish Reddy. You have got a great start to your career, and it’s only because of how you want to play the game and your attitude. I am 110 per cent sure that with that attitude, you are going to go a long way in this Indian team,” Rohit was quoted as saying in a BCCI video.

“You are going to be an all-format great, which I believe thoroughly, because, like you said in your speech yesterday, you want to be everywhere, and that is where we all want you to be doing that. I am 110 per cent sure that the team will rally around you. Anything you need, anytime you need anything, everyone will be there to support you. Good luck, have a great career,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Reddy scored 19 runs off 11 balls on his ODI debut, smacking two sixes to add crucial runs on the scoreboard towards the end. With his late fireworks with the bat, India reached 136/9 in the first innings, after they were asked to bat first by Australia.

However, Reddy’s efforts went in vain as the Men in Blue failed to defend their total and lost by seven wickets (DLS method) in the rain-affected clash, which was reduced to 26 overs per innings. Post the victory, Australia lead the three-match series 1-0.
