SA20: List of all winners in history

Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the most successful team in SA20 history.

The SA20 is the premier T20 league of South Africa, mainly played during the early months of January and February. It is organized by Cricket South Africa (CSA), and its inaugural season took place in 2023.

There are six participating teams based in cities across the country. Teams acquire players through an auction rather than a draft, making SA20 the third cricket league in the world, after the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the International League T20 (ILT20), to follow this system.

The six teams play each other twice in the group stage of the competition, after which the top four sides progress to the playoffs. So far, three seasons of SA20 have been completed, and two different teams have lifted the prestigious trophy.

On that note, let’s take a look at the winners of each SA20 season.

2023 – Sunrisers Eastern Cape

In the inaugural season of SA20, Pretoria Capitals finished as table toppers, winning 7 of their 10 matches. On the other hand, Sunrisers Eastern Cape won 4 out of 10 games to finish third on the points table and qualify for the semi-finals.

In the semi-final, the SEC defeated Johannesburg Super Kings after chasing a mammoth total of 200, courtesy of a brilliant century from captain Aiden Markram.

In the final, Sunrisers Eastern Cape faced the table toppers, Pretoria Capitals. Bowling first, the Eastern Cape restricted Pretoria to just 135 runs. It turned out to be an easy chase, as Sunrisers completed the target in 16.2 overs, winning the inaugural SA20 championship in Johannesburg.

2024 – Sunrisers Eastern Cape

To defend their title, Sunrisers Eastern Cape entered the second season and finished as table toppers, winning 7 of their 10 matches and losing only one. Durban Super Giants (DSG) finished second on the points table, also winning 7 out of 10 games.

In Qualifier 1, SEC defeated DSG by 51 runs to reach the final for the second consecutive season. DSG got another opportunity to qualify for the final by facing Johannesburg Super Kings in Qualifier 2, where they won convincingly by 69 runs.

The final was held at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town. SEC won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a formidable total of 204/3 in 20 overs, with Tristan Stubbs top-scoring with an unbeaten 56.

In reply, DSG could only manage 115 runs and were completely dominated by the SEC bowlers. Sunrisers Eastern Cape created history by winning back-to-back SA20 titles.

2025 – MI Cape Town

In the third season of SA20, MI Cape Town emerged as table toppers in the league stage with 7 wins from 10 matches. On the other hand, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, aiming to defend their title once again, finished third with 5 wins in 10 games.

MI Cape Town faced Paarl Royals in Qualifier 1 and defeated them by 39 runs to qualify for their first-ever SA20 final. The Royals got another chance to make the final by facing the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in Qualifier 2. However, the SEC handed them an 8-wicket defeat to secure their place in the third consecutive final.

The final was held at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. MI Cape Town won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a competitive total of 181/8 in 20 overs. In response, Sunrisers Eastern Cape collapsed for just 105 runs, suffering their first defeat in an SA20 final.

MI Cape Town created history by lifting their maiden SA20 title, adding another memorable chapter to their franchise’s legacy.
