Sanju Samson was part of the Indian squad that lifted the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy in Barbados.
India wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson talked about his dream coming true earlier this year. Samson also shared his thoughts on the incredible support from his fans throughout his cricketing journey.
The 29-year-old Samson made his T20I debut in Zimbabwe in 2015. In 2021, Samson made his ODI debut vs Sri Lanka.
Since his international debut nine years ago, the wicket-keeper batter has played only 46 games across both formats. This reflects that Samson’s journey with the national team has been filled with uncertainty.
Samson remains one of the most talented batters in the country, but the 29-year-old hasn’t gotten consistent opportunities.
Being part of the World Cup team is a dream come true moment: Sanju Samson
The wicket-keeper batter Samson had a phenomenal run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season with the bat. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper amassed 531 runs in 15 matches at an average of 48.27.
After performing brilliantly in the IPL 2024, Samson was included in the India’s 15-man squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
The 29-year-old didn’t get a single chance as Rishabh Pant was the first-choice keeper-batsman and played throughout the tournament. But since Samson was part of the squad, he is a T20 World Cup winner.
Samson expressed that being part of the World Cup-winning squad was a dream come true for him.
“The last 3-4 months have been the best of my career. Being part of the World Cup team is like a dream come true, something I desired 3-4 years ago. My wish was to play in my last ODI World Cup. However, it was only after joining the team and winning the Twenty20 World Cup that I realized it wasn’t an easy task. But in the last series against Sri Lanka, I didn’t perform as expected,” Samson told Zee.
The support I’ve received from people is amazing: Sanju Samson
The 29-year-old Samson enjoys a massive fan following not only in India but overseas as well. His fans have supported him in his ups and downs in his journey till now. The RR skipper acknowledged the support he gets across the globe.
“The support I’ve received from people across the country, as well as from Malayalis all the way from New Zealand to the West Indies, is amazing. Other team members often say that wherever I go, I have incredible support. That’s why they feel disappointed when I don’t make it into the team or when I get out for a duck. I have the maturity to understand that,” Samson concluded.
