Shoaib Malik has amassed 11867 runs across all three formats for the Pakistan cricket team.

Veteran Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik has revealed that he had rejected an offer by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to become the chief selector for the senior men’s cricket team before the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan had a shambolic T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The Men Green were knocked out in the group stage after suffering defeats against co-hosts United States of America (USA) and arch-rivals India.

Shoaib Malik makes an interesting revelation about getting an offer to become chief selector

The 42-year-old Malik revealed that he got an offer from the PCB for the chief selector’s role before the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. However, the veteran all-rounder rejected the offer because he was still playing domestic T20 cricket. He felt it could raise conflicts if he took up the role while still being an active cricketer.

“I got an offer before the 2024 T20 World Cup. There was no chief selector then and the entire committee had the same power. Yes, I got the offer. However, I am still playing some cricket. How can I select the cricketers with whom I am playing currently? It does not make sense to me that you are playing as well and are part of the selection committee too,” Shoaib Malik told reporters, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Malik retired from test cricket in 2015 and then announced his ODI retirement after the ICC ODI World Cup 2019. He last played for Pakistan in a T20I against Bangladesh in 2021.

The right-handed batter has played 446 international matches across the three formats (35 tests, 287 ODIs, 124 T20Is) and has amassed 11867 runs overall.
