Sunil Gavaskar revealed why he was not invited to present the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Pat Cummins.

It is befitting that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 ended with a little bit of more controversy and drama as Sunil Gavaskar was not invited to present the trophy to Pat Cummins and only Allan Border did the honors.

Australia won the five-match test series by 3-1 on Sunday with a six-wicket win in Sydney after chasing down the target of 162 runs against a Jasprit Bumrah-less Indian bowling attack. Sam Konstas, Beau Webster, Travis Head and Usman Khawaja played attacking knocks to ensure Australia didn’t have any hiccups in their chase.

With this, Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2014-15, having lost the previous four series against India, including twice at home.

Over the years, the tradition has been that both Gavaskar and Border would hand over the trophy to the winning captain. This time, however, Gavaskar was missing, as Border presented the trophy to Cummins. Gavaskar’s absence was taken a note of by the fans.

Why was Sunil Gavaskar not present at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy presentation ceremony?

Gavaskar revealed that he was told that he would be required on the stage only if India win the Sydney test match, which would mean the series would have ended 2-2 and India would have retained the trophy. This left Gavaskar “perplexed”.

“I was told just before the test started that was going to be the situation. If India didn’t win or draw the series I wouldn’t be required…I’m not feeling sad, but I’m just feeling a little perplexed. It’s the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, both of us should have been there,” Gavaskar said.

The former India skipper and legendary batsman added that he would have loved to be on the stage to hand over the trophy to Cummins alongside Border.

“I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India,” Gavaskar told News Corp.

“I mean, I am here at the ground. To me it should not matter Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played the better cricket so they won. That’s fine. I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border.”
