Vikram Rathour cleared up rumours about Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan returning to India.
Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour has opened up about the return of star cricketers Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan to India ahead of the Super Eight Stage of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), while announcing the 15-member squad, included four travelling reserves. Rinku Singh, Avesh, Shubman, and Khaleel Ahmed travelled with the Men in Blue during the USA leg of the ongoing ICC tournament.
Before India’s last Group A fixture against Canada in Florida, it was understood that batter Gill and pacer Avesh Khan would be heading back home from the United States of America after the end of group stage matches in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
It is understood that Gill will return home because the Rohit Sharma-led side already has a backup opener in Yashasvi Jaiswal, while the Indian think tank feel there won’t be a need for another pacer during the West Indies leg, so Avesh will also return to India.
India’s last group stage match against Canada on June 15 was abandoned due to wet outfield at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida.
It was planned: Vikram Rathour on Shubman Gill and Avesh’s return to India
Indian cricket team batting coach Vikram Rathour has quashed the rumours about Gill’s reported discipline issues in the USA.
Rathour explained that the Indian management had already planned to release two players from travelling reserve ahead of the Super Eight Stage in the West Indies.
“This was a plan from the beginning. When we come to the US, four players will come together. After that two will be released and two will travel with us to West Indies. So, this plan was made from the beginning since the team was selected. This was planned so we are just following that,” said Rathour during a press conference following the washout between India and Canada.
India finished in the top spot in the Group A standings. Out of four matches, the Men in Blue emerged victorious on three occasions. It is to be noted that the Indian side played all their matches in the United States and they will now travel to the Caribbean Islands for the Super 8 leg of the T20 World Cup 2024.
The Men in Blue will play their first Super Eight stage match against Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados, on June 20.
