Virat Kohli is making his first Ranji Trophy appearance since November 2012.

The seventh game of Delhi’s Ranji Trophy 2024-25 campaign against Railways started on Thursday, January 30, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

The game marks the return of one of India’s most legendary batsmen, Virat Kohli, to the Ranji Trophy for the first time since November 2012. His return has brought unmatched excitement among local fans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium for a domestic game. Over 15000 spectators rushed into the gates of the stadium on day 1 of this fixture.

A special moment came in the first session when a fan ran the length of half the ground to touch Kohli’s feet to showcase his admiration for the modern-day great. The fan was quickly caught and escorted off the field by security.

In a heartwarming gesture, Kohli was seen asking the ground officials and security not to hit the fan who had disrupted play.

Kohli’s return to domestic cricket comes after a tough run in test cricket. The India No. 4 managed only 417 runs in 19 innings in 2024, with a lowly batting average of 24.52.

His struggles were more evident during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, where he was repeatedly dismissed by edging deliveries outside off stump.

The Indian team will hope the star batter regains his form before India’s upcoming five-match test series in England in June. He has also been named in India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

At the time of writing, Delhi have taken early wickets, reducing Railways to 87/5 at lunch. Wicketkeeper Upendra Yadav (27*) and Karn Sharma (2*) are at the crease, trying to rebuild the innings. Money Grewal has been the standout bowler, taking 2/14 so far.
