Sri Lanka won all three games in the league stage of Asia Cup 2025.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Team are locking horns with the Bangladesh Cricket Team in the first match of the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2025. The match between the two teams is taking place at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Saturday (20th September).
Sri Lanka, who won all three games in the league stage, were asked to bat first in the encounter. However, before the match started, one thing that caught the attention of many was the black armbands worn by the players of the Sri Lankan side.
This raised a lot of questions as to why Sri Lankan players are wearing black arm bands. However, the reason behind that has been revealed. The gesture is being done to pay tribute to all-rounder Dunith Wellalage’s father, who sadly passed away on Thursday.
It happened when Dunith Wellalage was playing for Sri Lanka in their last league game of Asia Cup 2025 against Afghanistan. The all-rounder was made known of the sad news just after the game ended and he immediately went back home to perform the rituals.
However, Dunith Wellalage showed great courage, as after performing the rituals, he joined the team again and is part of the XI for the ongoing game against Bangladesh in the Super Four stage. He received a lot of praise from the fans, who have come in numbers to support him. Ahead of the game, there was also a moment of silence observed in memory of his father.
Coming to the match, Sri Lanka had a brilliant outing with the bat. They posted 168 runs on the board with Dasun Shanaka (64*) hitting a whirlwind fifty.
