"Out of nowhere Dhoni became captain," Yuvraj Singh blames this reason for not becoming India captain
Yuvraj Singh played pivotal roles in India’s two ICC trophy wins in 2007 and 2011.
A major share of India’s World Cup 2011 win credit goes to all-rounder Yuvraj Singh. With his brilliant all-round skills, Yuvraj Singh also earned the big prize of player of the tournament. Just like in World Cup 2011, Yuvraj Singh also played a brilliant role in India’s successful campaign in the T20 World Cup in 2007. He has now opened up on why he was denied the leadership role when the board was looking after Rahul Dravid.
According to Yuvraj Singh, Greg Chappell and Sachin Tendulkar were the biggest roadblock in his appointment as skipper of Indian team for the T20 World Cup. Yuvraj Singh in a chat with former Indian batter Sanjay Majrekar, has revealed that he paid the price for standing up for his teammate, something that some of BCCI officials didn’t take well in their stride. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni was appointed as the captain of Indian team.
Yuvraj Singh revealed the reason
Yuvraj Singh in a chat with Sanjay Manjrekar said, “I was supposed to be the captain. But when the Greg Chappell issue happened, it was either Chappell or Sachin (Tendulkar). I was probably the only player to support my teammate at that point in time. Some of the BCCI officials didn’t like that. It was said that they should make anybody the captain but me. This is what I’ve heard, I’m not sure how true this is.”
Yuvraj further added that he was removed from vice-captaincy but he has no regrets as he will do the same if something happens once again. He added, “I was removed from vice-captaincy all of a sudden, Sehwag was not in the team. Out of nowhere, Mahi (Mahendra Singh Dhoni) became the captain of the 2007 World Cup. The decision went against me. But I have no regrets, today if the same thing happens, I will again support my teammate.”

Yuvraj Singh played a crucial role under MS Dhoni and won two ICC titles for India. Right after winning the World Cup 2011, Yuvraj was gripped by chronic cancer but he came out as a fighter after a long battle. Yuvraj Singh never got the chance to lead Indian side in any form of the game. He played 40 tests, 304 ODIs, and 58 T20I games for India in his 17 years long international career. Yuvraj smashed 14 ODI centuries and 3 test centuries.
