Belgium predicted lineup for the 2022 FIFA World Cup
The Red Devils are strong favourites to win the tournament and become world champions.
Belgium will be one of the teams to watch out for at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They are second in the FIFA men’s rankings heading into the tournament in Qatar. Their manager Roberto Martinez has been at the helm since 2016 and will hope to finally deliver a major international trophy with time running out for Belgium's golden generation to deliver.
The squad travelling to Qatar for the World Cup is full of excellent players. Players who ply their trade in Premier League, La Liga, etc will be part of the Belgium squad. Expectedly, there will be a lot of competition for places in the starting lineup. It will be interesting to see which players Martinez picks in the starting XI when the tournament begins.
Here is the predicted lineup for Belgium at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar:
Goalkeeper - Thibaut Courtois
Belgium has one of the best goalkeepers in Thibaut Courtois. The custodian was immense for Real Madrid last season, helping them lift the UEFA Champions League. He has 96 caps for the national team and will be hoping to cross a century of appearances at the World Cup.
Centre-Back - Zeno Debast
Zeno Debast plays for RSC Anderlecht in the Belgian top division and is one of the most promising defenders in Europe. The 19-year-old enjoyed a lot of gametime at the UEFA Nations League in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup. It will be a major opportunity for the youngster to impress while the world will be watching.
Centre-Back - Wout Faes
Wout Faes is one of the in-form players in the Belgian squad heading into the World Cup. His performances for Leicester City of late have been very impressive. The 24-year-old has only one international cap and could add more at the World Cup while playing in the heart of the defence.
Centre-Back - Jan Vertonghen
Jab Vertonghen will likely be the third centre-back in the defensive line for Belgium. The 35-year-old plays for Anderlecht in club football. This should be his last World Cup, therefore the defender will be hoping to finish on a high. With 141 appearances, he is the most experienced player in the team.
Right Wing-Back - Thomas Meunier
Belgium has several options in the wing-back position. On the right flank, one can expect Thomas Meunier to get the nod. The Borussia Dortmund player has the knack of contributing in attack and also remains solid in defence. He has eight goals in 58 appearances for the national team.
Left Wing-Back - Timothy Castagne
Timothy Castagne plays left-back for Leicester City FC. He could play as a left-wing back for the Red Devils at the FIFA World Cup. The 26-year-old has 25 appearances for the national team. Having said that, he will face competition for the starting place from the likes of Yannick Carrasco.
Defensive Midfielder - Axel Witsel
Belgium has a strong midfielder core. Axel Witsel is one of the key players in the squad. The 33-year-old has 126 appearances for the national team heading into the World Cup. He plays for Atletico Madrid these days and could be vital in Belgium’s campaign.
Defensive Midfielder - Youri Tielemans
Another Leicester City FC player who could find a starting place in the Belgium lineup is Youri Tielemans. The midfielder has a vast repertoire of skills and qualities. He is exceptional at recovering the ball and possesses the tendency to produce goals on odd occasions. The 25-year-old has 54 appearances for the national team already.
Attacking Midfielder - Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin De Bruyne is one of the players to watch out for at the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The skipper of the Red Devils has 93 caps for Belgium in which he has 25 goals and 46 assists. If the outfit is to attain the ultimate glory then Kevin De Bruyne must replicate his Manchester City form on the international stage.
Attacking Midfielder - Eden Hazard
Eden Hazard is an experienced player in the lineup and remains a vital part of the team. The 31-year-old has 122 appearances for the national team. He plays for Real Madrid but has been struggling to find form because of frequent injuries. If he remains fit, then the former Chelsea star should play an advanced role behind the striker.
Striker - Romelu Lukaku
While Mitchi Batshuayi has played in the striker’s position in recent times, it is Romelu Lukaku who remains the favourite to start ahead of him. The 29-year-old already has 68 goals in 102 caps for the national team. He scored four goals in the previous edition of the World Cup and will aim to surpass that number this time.
