The EURO 2020 finalists will be looking to finally take the trophy home this time around

England will look to end their drought of 56 years without a World Cup as they prepare for the 2022 World Cup. The Three Lions have won the World Cup once before, back in 1966. Since then despite having some very good squads, England have faced only disappointment on the international stage.

However, things have brightened up for the Three Lions under Gareth Southgate in recent years. In the last World Cup England finished fourth, their best finish in 28 years. They lost in the Semi-finals against Croatia and ended up losing the third place play-off against Belgium.

Southgate has picked his 26-man squad

England manager Gareth Southgate had a pool of talent to pick his squad from. With so many options it was natural that some good players would have to miss out. Many fans were surprised by the exclusion of the likes of Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham who have been scoring regularly for their respective clubs. Manchester United’s star winger Jadon Sancho also missed out.

Despite the exclusions, England still have a strong squad that is capable of going all the way. The Euro 2020 runners-up go into the tournament as one of the favourites.

England finished first in their qualification group

England were put in a group with Poland, Albania, Hungary, Andorra, and San Marino in the Qualifiers. They finished top of their group, thus confirming automatic qualification. The Three Lions won eight of their ten games in the qualifiers ending up with 26 points, six points ahead of second placed Poland.

England are seeded in Group B

England are in Group B, which also includes USA, Wales, and Iran. None of the opponents will be easy to face for the Three Lions despite them being favourites to win the group.

England has faced Wales in Euro 2016 in which they emerged victorious 2-1 with the help of a stoppage time goal by Daniel Sturridge. England have faced USA in the group stages of a World Cup before. The two teams met in the group stages of the 2010 World Cup which resulted in a 1-1 draw.
