Top 10 defenders with the most assists in Premier League history

The record for most assists by a defender was recently broken.

A modern-day full-back defends and plays a crucial role going forward in attack. It is no surprise that two of the top three full-backs with the most assists in the Premier League are still active players. When it comes to entertaining football, the English top flight has an abundance of it. It is a competition where even defenders possess the ambition to contribute to the attack regularly. 

Over the years, the highly popular football league has seen extremely talented full-backs play in it. These individuals have shown that a wide defender has multiple roles and playing them well is central to any team’s success. 

Interestingly, the record for the most assists by a defender in the Premier League was recently broken by a Liverpool player. On that note, here is a look at the top 10 defenders with the most assists in the history of the competition:

Dan Petrescu – 33

Dan Petrescu played for clubs like Sheffield Wednesday, Chelsea, Bradford, and Southampton but his most fruitful display came with the Blues. He made 33 assists in 215 league appearances, proving to be a menace going in attack for the opposition.

Kyle Walker – 34

Kyle Walker is one of the few players on this list who is still active. The Manchester City full-back is popular for possessing pace and strength – a deadly combination. His contribution in the final third is usually underappreciated. The fullback has 32 assists in 343 league appearances.

Gary Neville – 35

Gary Neville is a legend at Manchester United. He was a sensational servant for the Red Devils, winning the Premier League 12 times. He had a long and illustrious career at the club, playing 400 times in the league alone. During that duration, the full-back, who was part of the Class of ’92 graduates, made 35 assists. 

Cezar Azpilicueta – 35

Cezar Azpilicueta has made 35 assists in 334 appearances in the Premier League. He was close to joining FC Barcelona in the summer of 2022 but eventually stayed at Chelsea where he has achieved a lot of success. He is the skipper of the Blues under Graham Potter’s leadership. 

Andy Hinchcliffe – 36

Andy Hinchcliffe was a product of Manchester City but made his mark for Everton during his playing days. He made 36 assists in the English top flight in merely 219 appearances. The defender also played for Sheffield Wednesday. 

Ian Harte – 36

Ian Harte was popular for his quality in free-kick situations. The former Leeds UnitedSunderland and Reading played made 36 assists in 237 appearances. The Irishman was known for being adventurous and a solid attacker while doing his defensive duties well. 

Graeme Le Saux – 44

Graeme Le Saux made 44 assists in 327 appearances. He is one of the four defenders in the league’s history to record more than 40 assists. The full-back played for clubs like Chelsea, Blackburn Rovers and Southampton. He won the league with Blackburn as well.

Leighton Baines – 53

Leighton Baines was previously the record holder for being the defender with the most assists in Premier League’s history. He made 420 appearances in the league, registering 53 assists. The full-back with a deadly set-piece delivery played for Wigan and most notably Everton.

Andrew Robertson – 58

Andrew Robertson is joint-top along with his teammate. The left-back has made 231 appearances. He will definitely add more assists to his tally in future alongside teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool FC. He has also featured for Hull City.  

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 58

Trent Alexander-Arnold has the most number of assists in the Premier League history. Liverpool’s full-back gives a lot of quality on set pieces. He gets most of his assists from corners. Interestingly, the English international holds the record for most assists by a defender in a single Premier League season with 13.
