Erling Haaland acknowledges where he can improve his game
The Norwegian striker recorded a career-high five goals on the night, setting various records.
Erling Haaland, whose five goals in Tuesday's 7-0 triumph against Leipzig propelled Pep Guardiola's team into the quarterfinals, said he was acquired by Manchester City in hopes of helping them win their first Champions League.
The 22-year-five old's goals at Etihad Stadium gave him a City team record of 39 goals, and Haaland is aware that Guardiola recruited him last summer in a bid to compete for a first victory in Europe's top club competition.
Haaland recorded 86 goals in 89 games for his last team, Borussia Dortmund, and he never had any doubts that he would keep up that pace.
The Norwegian had a chance at a goal in the 22nd minute when a handball by Benjamin Henrichs led to a penalty for City following a VAR review, which Haaland easily converted.
Within a single minute, he struck when he diverted Kevin De Bruyne's effort into the goal after it had hit the crossbar. The typical suspect, City's No. 9, once again put the ball in the net from the rebound after Ruben Dias' header was denied by Janis Blaswich.
More quickly than anybody else in the competition's history, Haaland scored 30 goals in just 25 games. In fact, at 22 years and 236 days, he is the youngest player to have done so.
Ruud van Nistelrooy had originally owned the first mark, while Lionel Messi had previously occupied the second.
Erling Haaland joins Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano as the third player to record five goals in one UEFA Champions League match (Shakhtar Donetsk vs. BATE Borisov, October 2014). (Barcelona v Bayer Leverkusen).
After speaking to CBS Golazo, Haaland said the team can improve a lot and he can also try to enhance himself in a few departments as he said:
“There is so much potential in this team and I think still we can improve a lot in the game, how we play. “It’s an easy thing to say but I could’ve scored more goals. I missed a lot of chances. But the most important thing is the chances [coming] because that is what you want as a striker."
The 22-year-old sensation was disappointed to learn that after being substituted at 63 minutes, a record double hat-trick was not possible. And Thierry Henry questioned him over his reaction to being replaced, the 22-year-old said:
“I told him [Guardiola] when I went off, ‘I would love to score a double hat-trick’. But what can I do? I had to go off.”
