Top five clubs with most appearances in Champions League semi-finals
These teams have prevailed on Europe’s grandest stage
At this point, some teams have failed while others have prevailed.
Season after season, the Champions League has produced thrilling matches, particularly in the semifinals. At this level, only the very finest make it. A team that exhibits guts and determination in this round advances to the final. But even just making it to the semifinals is a significant challenge.
In light of this, let’s examine the top five teams in the Champions League era in terms of semi-finals participation. (1992/93-2021/22).
Manchester United: 12
Manchester United are one of the largest clubs in the game despite no longer being at the highest point of the football pyramid. However, the Red Devils consistently advanced far in the tournament throughout Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign.
Three times, including twice during the UCL era, the Old Trafford team has won the Champions League. However, given that they had seven semi-final appearances in the event, these figures unquestionably might have been higher. Ferguson will feel bad about how his club performed under him in the competition. Erik Ten Hag will now be responsible for putting together a team that can consistently advance to the UCL semifinals.

AC Milan: 13
Clubs who have currently advanced to the UCL semifinals include AC Milan. On the other side, AC Milan advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 aggregate victory against Napoli after winning the first leg 1-0 and the second leg 1-1 draws. They’ll be participating in their 13th UEFA Champions League semifinal.
Barcelona: 16
Barcelona have had a long history of success in Europe, mostly due to the talents of outstanding coaches and elite players.
The club’s success in the UCL has been largely attributed to players like Johan Cruyff, Pep Guardiola, and Lionel Messi, and rightfully so. Although the Argentine striker is perhaps the best player to ever play the game, the Spanish manager put together one of the most terrifying teams in Europe.
If his team wants to go to the UCL’s semifinals next season, Xavi will need to finish a reconstruction at the Nou Camp in the upcoming months.
Bayern Munich: 21
Since the late 1990s, Bayern Munich have consistently participated in the Champions League. The most successful team in their nation is Germany, and they have consistently performed well in European championships.
However, in the past 30 years, they have made it to the competition’s semifinals 13 times, demonstrating the number of additional trophies they might’ve taken home. Bayern won their quarter-final in the 2023-24 season against Arsenal. A 2-2 tie at Emirates Stadium was followed by a 1-0 win at home.
Real Madrid: 33
Real Madrid are European rulers, as they have often demonstrated throughout their illustrious history. Seven of Los Blancos’ 13 UCL victories—a record—have occurred during the Champions League era.
However, Real Madrid have shown in the past that they never give up and have the ability to turn around games. The Spanish team has consistently performed well in European events. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if they continued to lead this list in the years to come. In 2024, the Los Blancos reached the last four for a record 33rd time.
