Which footballers have scored a hat-trick in El Clasico?
Only a handful of players have achieved this feast in history
One of the biggest matches in club football is El Clasico. When Barcelona and Real Madrid‘s superstar squads compete, the entire world pauses to watch, and winning one can declare a player legendary. When two teams are this good, matches between them frequently include amazing goals and intense brawls. A player hitting a hat trick in El Clasico is quite uncommon, though.
Standing applause from the opposing spectators has followed impressive performances by players like Andres Iniesta and Ronaldinho at the opponents’ stadiums, but neither has ever scored three goals against the opposition. Even Cristiano Ronaldo, who is tied for second place all-time in El Clasico scoring and holds the record for most career hat tricks, was unable to score a hat trick against Barcelona.
Just seven players have accomplished this since the end of 1980. The footballers that have scored a hat-trick in El Clasico are listed below:
Jesús Narro
Football star Jess Narro Sancho was well-known. In his final season in LaLiga with the squad “merengue,” he scored 13 goals and helped the team win the league championship alongside the legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano. He played for Real Madrid C.F. for six seasons. He was mostly a left midfielder for his team. His hat trick in the Spanish rivalry against FC Barcelona was arguably his best performance. The game was won by Real Madrid 4-1. At the age of 31, he gave up playing top-level football.
Ferenc Puskás
He was acknowledged as the 20th century’s best-highest goalscorer. He is the sixth most prolific goal scorer of all time, having scored 806 goals in 793 appearances with official standing. In 1963, Puskás defeated FC Barcelona twice with hat-tricks, once at Camp Nou and once at the Bernabéu.
Iván Zamorano
He was a strong and incisive goal scorer who was known for his ability to power through in the air. Several of his goals were headers. With 28 goals, including one with a hat-trick against FC Barcelona, Zamorano inspired Real Madrid to win the Spanish League championship. He also won the Pichichi Trophy for the season’s best scorer. At Real Madrid, Zamorano made 173 appearances and scored 101 goals.
Fernando Sañudo
From 1934 and 1936, Fernando, a retired Spanish footballer who specialised in a forward position, played for Real Madrid. He joined Real Madrid on a contractual basis and played a key role in the club’s 1936 Copa del Rey victory. He scored four goals during Real Madrid’s 8-2 victory over FC Barcelona, which was the team’s largest victory ever.
Gary Lineker
Gary Lineker was a useful player for Barcelona before he started making terrible jokes on Match of the Day. He is still the only Englishman to collect a hat trick in El Clasico. At a hotly anticipated La Liga match between the two footballing behemoths of Spain in January 1987, Lineker scored a brace in the opening five minutes.
Before Real Madrid’s Jorge Valdano and Hugo Sanchez could mount a comeback, the game finished 3-2. He scored his third at the opening of the second half.
Romario
The legendary Brazilian player played for Barcelona for just two seasons, but during that time he scored 39 goals in 65 matches, including a sensational hat trick versus Real Madrid during the 1993–94 campaign. When Real Madrid visited Camp Nou in January 1994, they were humiliated 5-0 and had to flee with their tails between their legs.
Romario stole the show, scoring twice in the second half following Ronald Koeman’s potent free kick and starting the scoring with an outside boot finish after a Pep Guardiola through the pass. Such a spectacle is worth the ticket cost by itself.

Ivan Zamorano
In January 1995, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 5-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu thanks to Ivan Zamorano’s first-half hat-trick, which served as payback for Romario’s shenanigans at the Nou Camp.
Luis Suarez
Suarez’s El Clasico hat-trick occurred in October 2018 as Barcelona racked up a 5-1 victory against Real Madrid at Camp Nou, with Luis Suarez winning the game’s golden ball. This was before Karim Benzema’s Cup del Rey heroics. A miraculous outcome was achieved, with an injured Lionel Messi watching from the sidelines, thanks to a penalty, an unbelievable header, and a dirty chip.
Lucio Suárez? Rewards come through perseverance. The result of all he has been doing is the hat trick. After the game, manager Ernesto Valverde beamingly said, “He is always there.
Karim Benzema
Real Madrid and the incumbent Ballon d’Or winner were under siege as they made their way to Camp Nou for the return leg of their Copa del Rey matchup.
They were behind 1-0 in the competition after losing the first leg at the Bernabeu, and they’ve all but given up their league title after a previous 2-1 El Clasico loss gave Barcelona a 12-point advantage that is unquestionably insurmountable.
Given that Barcelona’s defence has dominated this season, allowing only nine league goals, the challenge of overcoming the gap seems extremely challenging. Evidently, Benzema missed the memo.
The Los Blancos skipper was obviously in a good mood after hitting three goals in the span of seven minutes against Real Valladolid at the weekend. He assisted Vinicius Junior in setting up Madrid’s equaliser just before halftime before taking control of the situation with a hat-trick in the second half that destroyed Barcelona and advanced Madrid to the Copa del Rey final game.
Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi has been the only player in history to make this list twice, which was inevitable. His debut came in a 3-3 tie against Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o at Camp Nou in March 2007, while he was still a youngster.
In March 2014, he accomplished the feat once more, this time winning 4-3 at the Bernabeu. Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored goals, but Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick in addition to Andres Iniesta’s opening goal to defeat the tense contest. Messi’s second penalty of the game came in the 87th minute.
Vinicus Jr
The Brazilian superstar scored a fantastic first-half hat-trick against Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana on 14th January 2024. The match was held in Saudi Arabia at AL Nassr’s home ground Al-Awwal Park Stadium. Vincius Jr gave Madrid the lead in the 7th minute and doubled his team’s total in the 10th. While he completed his hat trick with a penalty in the 39th minute. Real Madrid won the 4-1 to lift the Supercopa de Espana.
