The custodian will give his best to gain a spot in the main squad ahead of the Hero Intercontinental Cup.

Gurmeet Singh of Hyderabad FC will join the Indian camp ahead of its preparations for the Hero Intercontinental Cup in Bhubaneswar and the SAFF Championship in Bengaluru. Igor Stimac calls the custodian for the preparatory camp after injuries to Mumbai City FC’s Phurba Lachenpa and Suresh Singh Wangjam of Bengaluru FC.

According to reports, Phurba Lachenpa suffers from a right adductor strain. On the other hand, Suresh Singh Wangjam is nursing a hamstring injury and remains unavailable for selection until fully fit. It is unfortunate to see two high-quality figures suffer injuries and lose the chance to represent India on the international stage after fruitful campaigns for their respective clubs.

Gurmeet Singh - a reliable figure

Hyderabad FC made it into the playoffs of the 2022-23 season of the Indian Super League and Gurmeet Singh was a major factor in their positive campaign. He kept seven clean sheets during the term which was crucial in helping the Nizams secure second place in the table and reach the semi-finals.

Laxmikant Kattimani’s long-term injury gave Gurmeet Singh a chance to show his class at Hyderabad FC and he used the opportunity brilliantly. To this day, the custodian has 24 appearances in the Indian Super League, making 63 saves and keeping nine clean sheets. He has come a long way since making his debut for NorthEast United back in the 2018-19 season of the ISL. His composure with the ball and shot-stopping ability has improved significantly over the years, something that can benefit the Blue Tigers as well.

A chance to make his national team debut is one that Gurmeet Singh won’t take for granted. Igor Stimac will have a brilliant goalkeeper at his disposal if Gurmeet makes the final list for the Hero Intercontinental Cup and the SAFF Championship.

India’s first assignment at the Hero Intercontinental Cup is on 9 June, 2023 against Mongolia.
