Redeem Tlang set to sign for NorthEast United
The winger was previously a reputed figure in the NorthEast United squad.
Indian Super League (ISL) outfit NorthEast United FC have roped in their former superstar Redeem Tlang ahead of the 2023-24 season, Khel Now can confirm. The winger joins the Highlanders after a not so successful stint with FC Goa.
From what we know Redeem had multiple offers on the table but he wanted to act upon it soon and could not wait for others clubs to decide and therefore ended up signing for his former side.
“NorthEast United and Redeem Tlang have reached an agreement and the player will re-sign for the Highlanders ahead of the 2023-24 season. The player could not wait for other clubs to decide,” a source close to developments informed Khel Now.
About the player
A product of the well known Shillong Lajong FC, Redeem has come up through the ranks and has even featured for the first team. After spending nine years and making 45 appearances and scoring three goals for Shillong Lajong, Tlang decided to explore a new adventure.
He was once loaned out to NorthEast United FC in the inaugural ISL season before making a permanent switch to the Guwahati based side in the 2018-19 season. Redeem came in and instantly became the then head coach Eelco Schattorie’s most trusted player on the wings.
He kept on delivering good performances all throughout the season but had no numbers to show for his hard work until he scored his first goal for the Highlanders against India’s best goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. Redeem’s left-footed strike helped NorthEast score the opener against Bengaluru FC in the first semi-final.
After a great season, Redeem was expected to get much better and he did live up to his hype. Tlang went on to score three goals in the 2019-20 season and ended the season as the club’s top Indian goal-scorer.
After playing 35 games in total and scoring four goals for the Highlanders, Redeemed was roped in by FC Goa ahead of the 2020-21 season. The winger joined the Gaurs on a multi-year deal.
He featured for Goa at the AFC Champions League, the ISL, the Durand Cup and the Hero Super Cup as well. His move to Goa didn’t go down well for him as injuries and lack of game-time became the only constant for him.
During his stint with Goa he was loaned out to Odisha FC in the 2021-22 season where he played eight games and scored a goal. He played 40 games for FC Goa across three seasons and scored five goals in the process.
NorthEast United FC’s preparations
The Highlanders have released 13 players to begin their rebuilding process. The club has hired the services for Mandar Tamhane and have appointed him as the new CEO. Mandar has appointed Spanish tactician Juan Pedro Benali as the new head coach. And now Redeem joins them which will act as a huge boost to the club’s attacking prowess.
