Iceland's playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson close to joining Wayne Rooney's DC United in MLS
The 33-year-old last played for Everton in the Premier League
Gylfi Sigurdsson is eager to return to action, and the Icelandic midfielder is closing in on a move to MLS side DC United. The team is currently managed by English legend Wayne Rooney, and both of these players spent the 2017-18 season together at Everton.
According to the Sun, the 33-year-old is due in Washington to sign the contract with the Major League Soccer side.
The playmaker was arrested in July 2021 "on suspicion of child sex offences." Now, after getting cleared, he is a free agent and looking to resume his football career.
Gylfi Sigurdsson started his career at Reading in 2008. They were then playing in the EFL Championship. The player was then sold to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in 2010. After two seasons in the German top division, Sigurdsson was sent on loan to Swansea City in the Premier League.
The attacking midfielder impressed everyone and was signed by Tottenham Hotspur. After two seasons in North London, the Icelander returned to Swansea City, this time on a permanent deal. He spent three seasons with the Swans, and then Everton came to sign him.
Gylfi Sigurdsson played four seasons with the Toffees, and then he was arrested at the start of the 2021–22 season. His contract expired at the end of the season, and Everton released the player. Since then, the 33-year-old has been out of action.
DC United are currently ninth in the MLS Eastern Conference. Christian Benteke, Matheusz Klich and Lewis O'Brien have already added their Premier League experience to Wayne Rooney's side. Gylfi Sigurdsson's addition to the squad could improve the team's creativity.
