AFC CUP 2023: All time head-to-head record between Mohun Bagan SG and Dhaka Abahani
MBSG have an edge over Dhaka Abahani when it comes to past records
Mohun Bagan Super Giant face a challenging test against Dhaka Abahani in their AFC Cup 2023 Qualifiers Playoff Round clash on Tuesday, August 22. The Mariners need to win the game at the Salt Lake Stadium to book a place in the group stages of the AFC Cup.
In the Sky Blue Brigade, Mohun Bagan faces one of Bangladesh’s top teams and arguably their most successful one in Asian competitions too. These two teams have, interestingly met each other on quite a few occasions over the last decade.
Here we look at the all-time head-to-head record between the Mariners and Dhaka Abahani and how their past results went.
ATK Mohun Bagan 3-1 Dhaka Abahani (19 April 2022)
These two teams actually met last year in the Preliminary Round 2 clash of the AFC Cup qualifiers. The erstwhile ATK Mohun Bagan proved to be too strong for the Bangladesh Premier League side and totally dominated them at the Salt Lake Stadium.
A hattrick from Australian striker David Williams powered Juan Ferrando’s side to a 3-1 win over the Sky Blue Brigade. On that occasion, the Kolkata giants were in total control and swashed aside Dhaka Abahani to take a step closer to the AFC Cup 2022 group stages.
Mohun Bagan 3-1 Dhaka Abahani (4 April 2017)
Before the preliminary qualifier clash, the last time that Mohun Bagan had met Dhaka Abhani was way back in the 2017 AFC Cup group stages. Both sides were pitted against each other in group stages alongside Bengaluru FC and Maldives’ side Maziya.
Their first game in the group stages was held at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium and in a dominant start to the group stages for the Mariners. They actually went behind in the 21st minute thanks to a goal from Abahani striker Jonathan Brown.
However, Mohun Bagan roared back in the game after an equalizer in the 45th minute from Jeje Lalpekhlua. That gave him the momentum they needed, with Balwant Singh and Sony Norde scoring a goal a piece to clinch a 3-1 win.
Dhaka Abahani 1-1 Mohun Bagan (31 May 2017)
When Dhaka Abahani and Mohun Bagan met in their final game of the 2017 AFC Cup group stages, both had no chance of making it to the knockout stages. They had been eliminated and had only pride to play for.
The Bangladesh side produced an inspired performance to get somewhat of a revenge for their previous loss. They scratched their way to a 1-1 draw, which was only possible because of an 83th-minute equalizer from Katsumi Yusa. This time, Mohun Bagan will hope the game isn’t that tight at all and that they can get a comfortable win at the Salt Lake Stadium to move into the group stages.
