Premier League 2023-24: Chelsea vs Liverpool: Predicted lineup, injury news, head-to-head, telecast
Both the Blues and the Reds have points to prove in the Premier League this season
Chelsea had a disastrous last season. They settled for a 12th place finish, which is the lowest in their last 30-year history in English top flight. Even though the previous two transfer windows were backed by huge investments of over £600 million, the results have been quite the opposite. Chelsea under new manager Mauricio Pochettino have changed their approach after a lot of top players were allowed to depart. The squad size is now much trimmed to take on the upcoming Premier League season with a few additions.
Liverpool similarly also had a bad season as per their standards. Klopp’s men finished fifth in the league and soon an exodus of players particularly in the midfield sector mainly followed. Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Arthur Melo were allowed to leave Anfield. As you can quite rightly see, this exodus left a void in the midfield. However, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have recruited Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to do the job going into the 2023-24 season.
Kick-Off:
Sunday, 13 August 2023 at 4:30 PM BST (9 PM IST)
Location: Stamford Bridge
Form
Chelsea (in all competitions): D-W-D-W-W
Liverpool (in all competitions): W-L-W-D-W
Players to Watch
Nicolas Jackson (Chelsea)
Chelsea fans have already witnessed Nicolas Jackson in action in pre-season against Premier League sides. After seeing him display his football against Newcastle, Brighton and Fulham we can make a few conclusions. The former Villarreal striker has great positional awareness and is pacy. This will make him capable of running behind the high Liverpool backline to post a threat or two in the game. And adding to the threat is his strength and desire to drop deep to link up play.
Dominik Szoboszlai (Liverpool)
After Liverpool parted ways with almost all their senior talent available at its disposal in the midfield, fans were left nail-biting. Dominik Szoboszlai, the new addition in midfield gave much relief to the Anfield fans along with Alexis Mac Allister. Although Mac Allister has shown his pedigree in Premier League already with Brighton, it will be Szoboszlai who can be the X factor this term. The £60 million signing from RB Leipzig is highly athletic and will add to the dynamism of the squad both in attack and defence.
Match Facts
- Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has come out on top just 3 times in 16 games against Liverpool as a manager
- The last four meetings between Chelsea and Liverpool have been goalless. And if this one also ends as one, it will make history to do it so five times in a row in English football history for the very first time
- In the previous six confrontations, both Chelsea and Liverpool have settled for a draw
Injury & Team News for Chelsea vs Liverpool
Chelsea fans are left fuming as summer signing Christopher Nkunku is already ruled out for several months due to a knee injury. Centre back Wesley Fofana also is sidelined with the same issue. On a positive note, both Benoit Badiashile and Noni Madueke have successfully returned to training after ongoing hamstring issues. Armando Broja will also be match fit to make the bench in time.
After already having had a midfield exodus, Liverpool fans were worried about chances of missing out on Thiago Alcântara’s magic as he was out with a hip injury. While an adductor issue also remained a concern for midfielder Stefan Bajčetić. But both are seemingly back in training. So Klopp’s men will have a full squad at their disposal to go all guns out blazing as they travel away to face Chelsea.

Match Prediction for Chelsea vs Liverpool
Chelsea have had a promising pre-season tour winning the inaugural Premier League Summer Series while also remaining unbeaten. Even without Christopher Nkunku’s availability, the Blues squad is pretty well-rounded and capable on paper to take Liverpool toe-to-toe until the final whistle. But we back Liverpool to snatch the win in their opening game for the 2023-24 Premier League season. Salah, Szoboszlai and co will be hard to handle for the hosts at Stamford Bridge. The Reds also have had a habit of great starts in the opening game for the last ten seasons straight.
Prediction: Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool
