Can Jurgen Klopp’s new look midfield guide Liverpool back to League title?
The Reds have gone on a crusade to rebuild their midfield
Liverpool entered the ongoing transfer window after a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, some even called their campaign disastrous by their standards. They finished fifth in the Premier League, meaning they will not feature in the Champions league this season, they were nowhere near consequential in EFL or the FA Cup.
Liverpool had many misfires in their campaign, a lot of blocks in machinery were identified and a lot of them were actually fixed within the season. However, a glaring hole in Liverpool’s squad was their midfield.
Liverpool’s midfield lacked creativity and aggression, the midfield was not able to provide as many goalscoring opportunities as it should have, resulting in increased pressure on the wingers and strikers like Salah, Nunez, and Gakpo to play outside their comfort zone, resulting in a shift in their duties on the pitch.
On the other hand, the absence of a dynamic midfield also made defending in the back third of the pitch very hard. Liverpool would often lose possession of the ball in their back third of the pitch, resulting in them conceding a lot more goals than they would normally do.
Liverpool’s pressing and counter pressing also took a hit, as midfielders and wingbacks would hesitate in going forward due to the gaping hole in the middle.

Liverpool’s already thinning midfield took a massive hit when many veterans like Fabiniho, Jordan Henderson, and most notably, Roberto Firmino left Anfield to go to the Saudi Pro League.
Needless to say, building their midfield was on the top of the priority list when Klopp entered the transfer window.
First up, Klopp managed to pull Argentine Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton for 34m pounds. The World Cup winner was very impressive at Brighton and as he is a holding midfielder, he will come more than handy at Anfield. Next, he acquired Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig
, Szoboszlai is an attacking midfielder who has demonstrated quality awareness, creativity, passing, and even finishing abilities. And finally, Klopp broke the transfer record when he brought Moises Caicedo from Brighton, breaking the British transfer record in the process. Caicedo is a defensive midfielder who has impressed since he joined Brighton in 2021. To acquire him, Liverpool got into a bidding war with Chelsea, who themselves were pursuing him for a long time.
Klopp has made sure Liverpool’s midfield investments are dynamic and young, so that they can remain at Anfield for long. What remains to be seen is will Klopp be able to present Liverpool with a turnaround from last season.
