Football transfers often capture global headlines. Neymar‘s move to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2017 was no exception. PSG shattered the transfer record, shelling out €222 million. This monumental fee came with enormous expectations. However, Neymar‘s tenure in Paris has largely disappointed.

Now the Brazilian looks set to join Suadi Pro League club Al-Hilal on a mega contract. Here’s why Neymar’s mega move to PSG can be considered a failure.

Why Neymar’s mega money move to PSG has been a total failure?

1. Lack of European Success:

Champions League glory was the main goal. Neymar was supposed to be PSG’s missing piece. Unfortunately, European success continued to elude the Parisians. Despite domestic dominance, PSG couldn’t reach the pinnacle of European football. Neymar’s impact, sadly, didn’t change this equation.

2. Injury Woes:

Neymar’s tenure in Paris has been injury-riddled. These recurring injuries hampered his consistency. Consequently, Neymar often missed pivotal matches. For the world’s most expensive player, regular absence became a major issue.

3. Friction with Teammates:

Neymar’s relationship with some teammates has been tense. Notably, his on-field spat with Edinson Cavani over penalty duties raised eyebrows. Such incidents undermined team unity and harmony. A united squad is crucial for success, but Neymar’s actions occasionally disrupted this.

4. Off-field Controversies:

His time in Paris hasn’t been controversy-free. Several off-field incidents tarnished Neymar’s reputation. From birthday party controversies to disagreements with the coaching staff, his behaviour often overshadowed his on-pitch contributions.

5. Limited Growth as a Player:

At Barcelona, Neymar had shown immense promise. Many expected his move to PSG would solidify his Ballon d’Or aspirations. However, Ligue 1‘s competitive level is often questioned. Neymar’s development seemed to stagnate, rather than accelerate, in Paris.

6. Leadership Questions:

Neymar arrived in Paris as a potential leader. However, leadership is about more than just skill. It’s about guiding the team through tough times. Unfortunately, Neymar often seemed absent during critical moments. His leadership qualities were, therefore, questioned.

7. Unfulfilled Expectations:

Given the transfer fee, expectations were sky-high. PSG fans expected consistent match-winning performances. Though Neymar showcased moments of brilliance, they were sporadic. He couldn’t consistently deliver the expected magic.

8. Shadows of Mbappé:

Kylian Mbappé’s rise at PSG was meteoric. Quickly, he became Paris’ golden boy. Often, Mbappé outshone Neymar, especially in critical fixtures. Instead of being the main man, Neymar sometimes played second fiddle.

9. Financial Strains:

Neymar’s hefty salary placed financial pressure on PSG. This limited PSG’s ability to strengthen other areas of the squad. Balancing the books became a significant challenge for the Parisians.

10. Strained Relationship with Fans:

Initially, PSG fans welcomed Neymar with open arms. However, his rumoured return to Barcelona didn’t sit well. Boos and jeers became more frequent in the Parc des Princes. A strong bond between players and fans is essential. Sadly, Neymar’s relationship with PSG fans deteriorated over time.

11. Media Scrutiny:

Every move Neymar made was under the microscope. This constant scrutiny added unnecessary pressure. Instead of focusing on football, Neymar often found himself defending his actions.

12. Questionable Commitment:

Neymar’s commitment to PSG’s project was frequently questioned. Rumours constantly linked him with a move away. This led many to believe that his heart wasn’t truly in Paris.

Opinion:

Transfers in football are always a gamble. Neymar’s move to PSG had the potential to be groundbreaking. Sadly, various factors turned this dream move into a challenging stint. Neymar remains a world-class talent, no doubt. However, his time at PSG can be seen as a period of unfulfilled potential.

While the Parisian chapter in Neymar’s career has had its moments, the overall narrative leans towards disappointment. Success in football isn’t just about individual brilliance. It’s about teamwork, leadership, and consistency. In these areas, Neymar’s PSG journey has left much to be desired.
