Seven players who scored debut goals in Premier League 2023-24 opening week
Debut goals came in abundance this Gameweek
With start of the most anticipated league in the world: Premier League, there were a lot of eyes on the big new signing such as Mount, Rice, Havertz. But there were other players who got their names in the headlines. Three of these debutants scoring in one fixture where Brighton hosted the newly promoted Luton Town. With big scorelines there came alot of players to manage their debut goal and highly anticipated Italian midfielder, Sandro Tonali was the one to get the first goal of the season for Magpies. Let’s take a look at all the players who were able to get their goal count started in the Premier League.
7. Axel Disasi: Chelsea vs Liverpool
Disasi scores on debut! Liverpool not able to clear the corner and Chilwell’s daft header from the edge of the box, falls straight to Disasi who bundles it in. Chelsea, in their first Premier League game under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, rallied and drew level with an equaliser from new signing Axel Disasi, who scored from six yards after Liverpool failed to clear a set-piece.
Liverpool could not clear their lines and they cracked under sustained aerial pressure, Chilwell guiding a header back into the area and Disasi punishing sleepy defending from Alexander-Arnold by poking the loose ball beyond Alisson.
6. Harvey Barnes: Newcastle United vs Aston Villa
Barnes joined Newcastle United on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £38m. On 12 August, he recorded his first goal and assist on his debut in a 5–1 win over Aston Villa. The 25-year-old, capped once by England, has signed a five-year contract with the Magpies.
Barnes was the latest player to leave the Foxes after their relegation from the Premier League. He made 146 Premier League appearances for Leicester, scoring 35 goals and creating 25 assists. Despite scoring 13 league goals in 2022-23, he could not save them from dropping into the Championship.
5. Moussa Diaby: Newcastle United vs Aston Villa
Moussa Diaby cancelled out his fellow debutant’s goal within five minutes, though, beautifully controlling a half-volley with his weaker foot after Ollie Watkins’ flick-on. Emery has added highly rated players in attack and defence in the form of the lightning-quick Diaby for a reported £51m and Spain centre-back Pau Torres for £31m.
Those additions have proven to be prescient already as a result of injuries to centre-back Mings and playmaker Emiliano Buendia this week. Newcastle’s advantage lasted only fleetingly when Diaby, who had seen an earlier attempt from a tight angle saved by Nick Pope, was similarly well-placed to equalize after Ollie Watkins had flicked on Lucas Digne’s left-wing cross.
4. Sandro Tonali: Newcastle United vs Aston Villa
The former AC Milan player was handed an immediate Premier League debut and, in addition to his goal, combined slickly with Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton in a promising midfield full of athleticism and technique. Newcastle tore into the visitors from the early stages at St James’ Park and new signing Sandro Tonali made their dominance count when he converted Anthony Gordon’s inviting sixth-minute cross.

3. Simon Adingra: Brighton vs Luton Town
Albion looked set to ease to victory on the back of last season’s club-record sixth-place finish which secured a Europa League place. After conceding goal from the spot, the 21-year-old Ivorian Adingra sealed the Seagulls’ win by slotting home after a bad mistake from Luton’s Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu. Adingra capitalized on a dreadful error from Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu before fellow substitute Evan Ferguson sealed the Seagulls’ emphatic victory.
2. Carlton Morris: Brighton vs Luton Town
Carlton Morris slotted home from the spot at the other end following Lewis Dunk’s foul in the penalty box to set up a tense finale. The Hatters pulled a goal back with nine minutes remaining when last season’s top scorer Carlton Morris converted another penalty – awarded for handball against Lewis Dunk. The penalty was awarded after a cross from substitute Jacob Brown struck the elbow of Dunk briefly bringing back the tension.
1. Joao Pedro: Brighton vs Luton Town
Joao Pedro and Simon Adingra claimed debut goals as Brighton set aside Moises Caicedo’s ongoing transfer saga to thrash Premier League debutants Luton 4-1. Club record signing Pedro doubled Albion’s lead following Solly March’s first-half opener by converting a 71st-minute penalty after being brought down by Hatters captain Tom Lockyer.
Brazilian forward Pedro, whose every touch was booed by the travelling fans following his £30million transfer from Luton’s bitter rivals Watford, should have opened the scoring inside five minutes but he skewed wastefully wide of the gaping goal.
