Roberto Mancini resigns as head coach of the Italian national team
The manager steered Italy to Euro 2020 win
Roberto Mancini has left Italy’s national team as their head coach with an immediate effect a year before their quest to defend Euro 2024.
Only ten months prior to Italy’s Euro campaign being set to start in Germany, the former Manchester City manager leaves his position.
Mancini, 58, became the Azzurri’s manager in 2018 after a stint with Zenit St. Petersburg.
Then, in his debut tournament in charge, he led them to victory at Euro 2020 by defeating England in the Wembley final.
Then, although winning the European champions, Italy’s destiny turned around as they missed out on qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar.
“The Italian Football Federation announces that it has taken note of the resignation of Roberto Mancini from the position of coach of the Italian national team, received yesterday late in the evening.

Italy finished third in the 2021 and 2023 Nations League Finals under Mancini’s direction.
He oversaw the start of their Euro 2024 qualifying quest earlier this past year when his team lost to England at home 2-1 before triumphing in Malta 2-0.
According to a statement from the FIGC that Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio shared:
“This concludes, therefore, a significant page in the history of the Azzurri, which began in May 2018 and ended with the 2023 Nations League Finals, and in between, the victory at Euro 2020, a triumph conquered by a group in which all the individuals knew how to become a team.
“Taking into account the important and close commitments for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers (10 and 12 September with North Macedonia and Ukraine), the FIGC will communicate the name of the new coach of the national team in the next few days.”
Mancini is renowned for having led Italy through 36 games without a loss. His record at the end of his tenure was 37 victories, 15 ties, and 9 losses.
On October 17, Italy will face England at Wembley. They will contend with North Macedonia, Ukraine, and Malta in the interim.
With England leading the way after winning four of their first four games, Italy is presently third in Group C of their Euro 2024 qualification group. Italy, though, has only competed in two games so far. They suffered a 2-1 loss to Gareth Southgate’s team in March of this year prior to defeating Malta 2-0 a few days earlier.
Mancini’s exit is far from ideal given that Italy’s title contention in Germany might happen as soon as 10 months from now.
