Ranking the top five English players to play in German Bundesliga
Harry Kane becomes the latest Englishman to play in the German top flight.
Harry Kane has successfully joined FC Bayern Munich ahead of the 2023-24 season. In a long drawn-out transfer saga, Tottenham Hotspur finally agreed to a deal worth €100m with German Bundesliga heavyweights for the transfer of their star forward. The completion of the move brings an end to Kane’s association with Spurs which began all the way back in 2004.
Interestingly, Harry Kane joins an exclusive list of English players to play in the German Bundesliga. Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho is one such player who was recently a part of the German top flight. Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham also played for Borussia Dortmund before moving to Spain in a high-profile transfer.
As Harry Kane prepares for a new phase away from English football, here is a look at which players he joins in the list of top five English players who played in the German Bundesliga:
Kevin Keegan
Kevin Keegan played extensively for Liverpool and won three Premier League and one UCL with the Reds. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner is regarded as one of the finest English players of his generation.
Kevin Keegan moved to Hamburger SV in 1977 after spending six years with Liverpool. He won the Bundesliga title during the 1978-79 season with the club and made 90 overall appearances in the German league, scoring 32 goals in the process.
Jadon Sancho
Jadon Sancho emerged as one of the most promising prospects in European football due to his performances for Borussia Dortmund. The English winger joined the side in 2018 from Manchester City’s youth system. He went on to make 137 appearances for the Black & Yellows, scoring 50 goals and making 64 assists.
Manchester United had to patiently negotiate a deal with Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho’s signature. In the end, he cost €85.00m and made his way back to the Premier League. Notably, Sancho won the German Cup (DFB Pokal) with BVB in 2020-21.

Owen Hargreaves
Owen Hargreaves signed for FC Bayern Munich U19 squad in 1997 and went up the ranks to make 218 appearances for the senior team. During this period, the midfielder won four Bundesliga, one UEFA Champions League, three DFB Pokal titles and more with the German giants.
He signed for Manchester United in 2007 and won a UCL title with the Red Devils too in 2007-08. Furthermore, Hargreaves won four PL titles (three with MUFC and one with MCFC) before retiring as a professional in 2012.
Jude Bellingham
Jude Bellingham chose to sign for Borussia Dortmund over Manchester United citing more playing minutes and the former’s tendency to develop young players. Despite the best efforts from the Red Devils, the midfielder went to Germany and became an instant fan favourite with the Black & Yellow faithful.
Borussia Dortmund paid €30.15m for his services, which was a record fee for a 17-year-old at the time. Jude Bellingham made 132 appearances for BVB before securing a €103.00m move to Real Madrid.
Harry Kane
Harry Kane becomes the latest high-profile English player to move to the German Bundesliga as he signs for FC Bayern Munich. The striker is regarded as one of the best players in the world. He is a prolific goalscorer who will certainly add even more quality to an already strong FCB squad.
Harry Kane managed 213 goals in the Premier League from 320 appearances. He also has 21 goals in 32 UEFA Champions League outings and will certainly aim to add more to his tally while representing Bayern Munich at the continental stage. The skipper of the English national team will become outrightly the most notable English player to feature in the Bundesliga.
