ISL 2023-24: Gameweek 2 Team of the Week
Individual brilliancy took the driver's seat in ISL Gameweek 2.
The Indian Super League (ISL 2023-24) season is up and running. The last gameweek saw sensational footballing action that kept the fans on the edge of their seats. In particular, the Indian players came through to shine for their respective clubs in order to help them secure a positive result.
From Asheer Akhtar, Phalguni Singh and Parthib Gogoi of NorthEast United getting on the scoresheet to Jerry Mawihmingthanga also finding the back of the net for Odisha FC, there was a lot to celebrate for the fans, cheering for the domestic players. Foreigners also played key roles as is the usual case and took their teams to victories.
As another entertaining gameweek concludes, here is a look at the ISL Team of the Week:
GK - Sachin Suresh (KBFC)
Sachin Suresh continued his impressive start to the season for Kerala Blasters FC. The custodian secured another clean-sheet in a 1-0 win for the club. He made three saves during the game and did not let the pressure of the occasion get the better of him.
RB - Prabir Das (KBFC)
Prabir was crucial in helping Kerala Blasters FC keep a clean-sheet in a 1-0 win over Jamshedpur FC. The full-back made three clearances and an interception too, in a brilliant performance. His start to the season has been noteworthy.
CB - Odei Onaindia (FCG)
Odei Onaindia was a crucial reason why FC Goa secured a 1-0 win over Punjab FC. The centre-back was calm and composed in possession of the ball, finishing the match with an 85% passing success rate. He also made three clearances to help his team’s cause.
CB - Asheer Akhtar (NEUFC)
Asheer Akhtar had a brilliant outing for NorthEast United in a 3-0 win over Chennaiyin FC. The defender made four clearances and one interception but his most important contribution came towards the final minutes of the match. He scored the third goal for NEUFC with a thunderous strike from long-range into the top-right corner.
LB - Tondonba Singh (NEUFC)
NorthEast United delivered a spirited performance to defeat Chennaiyin FC and Tondonba Singh was one of their best performers on the night. The defender kept the CFC wingers in check and worked his socks off for his team. He made two clearances and finished with an 83% passing success rate.
CDM - Jeakson Singh (KBFC)
Jeakson Singh was immense for Kerala Blasters in the midfield. Thanks to his industrious performance, the Yellow Army were able to produce a win against the Men of Steel. The midfielder covered every blade of the grass and had two clearances as well.
CAM - Adrian Luna (KBFC)
Adrian Luna was the difference maker yet again for Kerala Blasters FC. His solitary goal secured three points for the Yellow Army against the Men of Steel. He also created two scoring chances for his teammates and invited four fouls, keeping the opposition defenders frustrated.
RW - Vikram Partap Singh (MCFC)
While Mumbai City FC drew their recent ISL fixture with Odisha FC owing to a 2-2 score, Vikram Partap Singh’s performance was a major positive. The winger provided the crucial assist for the late equaliser scored by Jorge Pereyra Diaz. His energy and hunger certainly made an impact on the game.
LW - Parthib Gogoi (NEUFC)
Parthib Gogoi scored in the opening game of the season and followed it up with a sensational strike in the second game as well. His goal from range in the 3-0 win over CFC was perhaps one of the best of the gameweek 2 of the ISL.
ST - Carlos Martinez (FCG)
Carlos Martinez scored on his ISL debut to hand FC Goa three points against Punjab FC. His goal separated the two sides and gave Manolo Marquez the perfect start to life as the head coach of the Gaurs in the ISL.
ST - Cleiton Silva (EBFC)
Cleiton Silva was the performer of the week in the ISL gameweek 2. The East Bengal FC skipper was sensational against HFC and scored both of his team’s goals in a 2-1 win. His winning goal was particularly magnificent as he scored from long-range with a precise free-kick in injury time, leading to electrifying celebrations in the stadium and on the pitch.
