Odisha FC struck three goals in the first half.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant saw their 2023/24 AFC Cup campaign scratch to an end with a bitter 5-2 loss to Odisha FC at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday, 27 October. The Mariners had actually taken the lead through Hugo Boumous in the 17th minute, but conceded three goals before half-time – with Roy Krishna, Diego Mauricio and Cy Goddard all scoring.
Kiyan Nassiri came off the bench to give some hope by making it 2-3 in the 63rd minute, but two goals in added time from Aniket Jadhav and Isaka Ralte helped Odisha get their revenge over the Mariners. The Juggernauts can now qualify for the knockout stages if they beat Bashundhara Kings in their last match, while the Mariners’ continental journey comes to an end. Here are the Player Ratings for the game:
Mohun Bagan Super Giant (by Uttiyo Sarkar)
Vishal Kaith – 4.0
Kaith could not really do much about the first two goals, which were created too quickly for him to track. Could’ve done better with the third that glided just past him or collecting cross leading to the fourth, before being embarrassingly chipped by Isak.
Brendan Hamill – 4.0
Hamill failed to really keep strict marking on Roy Krishna and was often caught out of position. Failed to mark Krishna for his goal and caught in bad positions after that too.
Hector Yuste – 4.5
Yuste was unable to hold together a strong enough defensive shape and struggled to deal with Odisha’s quick attacking moves. Caught in bad positions for the goal and unfortunate to see a backpass lead to the third.
Subhasish Bose – 4.5
The Mariners’ captain couldn’t stop the majority of the goals being created through the left side. Lost his concentration at times and made to pay for that, and totally lost sight of Jadhav for the final goal.
Asish Rai – 6.0
Rai started the game really well, making promising forward runs and found Boumous with a nice cross for his goal. But it was his sloppy clearance that resulted in Krishna’s goal and he was unable to stop Odisha from creating quite a few moves through his sides.
Glan Martins – 3.0
Glan had a night to forget, being completely overrun in the midfield. Failed to provide strong enough support to his backline and completely switched off at times, getting totally fooled for the third goal.
Sahal Abdul Samad – 6.0
Sahal had a topsy-turvy outing in the final third. He couldn’t really create anything major, but did threaten with his shooting ability and was unlucky to see a close-range attempt hit the bar in the second half.
Liston Colaco – 6.5
Liston was chaotic with his movement and dribbling ability, often dancing past defenders into promising areas. Played a nice role before the opener and caused trouble with his free-kicks, with one even hitting the post.
Hugo Boumous – 8.5
Boumous was the major driving force for Mohun Bagan SG in an underwhelming display. Worked his socks off in impressive carrying the ball forward and setting up a lot major chances. Opened the scoring with a well-taken strike and then set up the second with a great cross.
Armando Sadiku – 5.0
Sadiku failed to really get at the end of any prominent chance and struggled to really bully the defenders.
Jason Cummings – 5.0
Cummings was given absolutely no space in the final third and failed to add unpredictability to his game. He couldn’t threaten Amrinder at all, nor could he create anything significant. Missed a nice header in added time too.
Substitutes
Anirudh Thapa – 6.0
Thapa added a bit more fluidity to his side’s attacking prowess by moving the ball forward swiftly, but posed no real goal threat.
Kiyan Nassiri – 8.0
Nassiri proved that he deserves more starts with an admirable cameo. Scored a brilliant header to give hope to his side and constantly troubled the Odisha defenders with his silky movement.
Suhail Bhat – N/R
Failed to really make any goal-scoring difference in the end.
Deepak Tangri – N/R
Had a sloppy late cameo.
Odisha FC (By Gourav Samal)
Amrinder Singh – 6.5
Amrinder’s abilities were put to the test in the second half when MBSG launched an offensive strategy. While he managed to make a few saves, his performance appeared subpar for the majority of the game.
Narender Gahlot – 6
Narender failed at clearing the ball in the 17th minute of play that helped Hugo Boumous to take advantage of it and score the opening goal of the match.
Amey Ganesh Ranawade – 6.5
Ranawade was not only relinquishing straightforward possessions during the game but was also observed to be deficient in clearances predominantly in the latter half of the match.
Carlos Delgado – 7.5
Delgado appeared detached initially, but quickly regained his composure and became the anchor for Odisha throughout the remaining part of the game. He effectively dictated the pace of the midfield, showcasing his efficient control.
Jerry Lalrinzuala – 7
Jerry executed a crucial tackle in the 38th minute of play, a move that had the potential to place the opposing team in a favorable position to score another goal.
Lalthathanga Khawlhring – 6.5
Lalthathanga had some opportunities during the course of the game but failed to make the most of them. However, his overall performance was commendable.
Ahmed Jahouh – 7.5
Ahmed Jahouh exhibited exceptional control over the midfield during the match and served as a crucial focal point in their triumphant victory.
Cy Goddard – 7
Goddard secured the third goal for Odisha FC during the 41st minute of play, with a well-executed assist from Diego Mauricio.
Diego Mauricio – 8
Diego exhibited exceptional performance throughout the game. He not only scored the second goal to secure the lead but also provided an assist to Goddard for the third goal.
Mawihmingthanga – 7
Mawinhmingthanga displayed an impressive performance as he sprinted and executed a remarkable interception during the initial period of the match. However, during the second half, he appeared somewhat fatigued.
Roy Krishna – 8
The best of the lot in Odisha FC’s team. He scored the equalizer in the match and also assisted on two occasions that gave Odisha a much needed win.
Substitute
Isak Ralte – 7.5
Isak was replaced for CY Goddard in the match. He scored a brilliant goal during the end part of the game with a lofted shot that deceived the goalkeeper.
Princeton Rebello – 6
Princeton took over Jerry’s position on the field, exhibiting exceptional performance with his precise short passes during the latter stages of the game.
Sahil Panwar – 6
Sahil replaced Jerry Lalrinzuala in the match, but got too little time with the ball to prove his worth.
Aniket Jadhav – 7
Aniket was substituted for Mauricio during the match in the 83rd minute. In a thrilling turn of events, Aniket managed to score a magnificent goal in the 90+2nd minute, ultimately securing the victory for Odisha.
