The name of Mohun Bagan will be forever etched in the history books of Durgapur, West Bengal when the club’s name gets etched into a street of the town on Sunday, December 3. Indeed, it has been announced that the ‘Mohun Bagan Avenue’ will be inaugurated, marking the first time this kind of accolade has been given to a football club in Durgapur.

The street which also hosts places like Durgapur High School and the IQ City Hospital will be renamed in a tribute to the iconic Kolkata club. This has been made possible thanks to the help of the Mohun Bagan Durgapur Fans Club and the Durgapur Municipal Corporation’s efforts to pay the ultimate tribute to the Mariners.

The event will be hosted and overseen by a number of prominent personalities, including Durgapur MLA Pradip Mazumder, who played a major role in making this a possibility. Moreover, Mohun Bagan official Debashish Dutta will also be representing the club in the event and club legend Jose Ramirez Barreto is also going to be involved in the inauguration process.

The official inauguration will be done at 11:30 AM, after which the street will officially be known as Mohun Bagan Avenue in Durgapur. The Mariners actually have a special connection to Durgapur and have been greatly helped by those around the city in the past as well.

Indeed, Mohun Bagan’s acclaimed SAIL football academy was actually set up and operated in Durgapur in the past. The academy has given the platform to a number of prominent footballers of past and present.

The likes of East Bengal midfielder Souvik Chakraborty and Jamshedpur FC man Pronay Halder are both graduates of the SAIL football academy and spent their formative years in Durgapur!

Mohun Bagan has a healthy fan base around Durgapur and a die-hard fan club that has played a key role in ensuring that a particular street is now named after the club. The Mariners’ popularity around West Bengal remains at a high and this is proof of how special the club is for their faithful.
