This instance has happened only five times in English top flight history

Scoring or assisting a goal is a proud moment for any player, especially in the Premier League. But it won’t be the same if the ball hits the net on the wrong side of the field. No doubt own goals are one of the most embarrassing moments in the life of a player. However, players hitting the net in the wrong end and scoring against their own team are not rare. Similarly, players scoring for and against their own team in the same fixture isn’t rare. But a player scoring a goal, assisting in another and scoring an own goal in a single match is rare and uncommon.

Let us look at the five instances in which players register a goal, assist, and own a goal in the same Premier League game:

Kevin Davies v Aston Villa, Dec 2008

This unique incident happened when Bolton was playing away against Aston Villa in 2008. Kevin Davies was playing as a striker alongside Johan Elmander in the match. Villa started finding its feet in the game when Gabriel Agbonlahor scored an equaliser soon after Yohan’s goal. Aston Villa took the lead in the 40th minute of the game when Kevin Davies slotted the ball into his net from a cross.

During the 67th minute, Gabriel Agbonlahor doubled the home team’s advantage and Ashley Young finally put the game to bed in the 78th minute of the game. Nevertheless, Kevin Davies got a consolation goal for Bolton in the 86th minute. The match ended in a 4-2 scoreline for Aston Villa.

Wayne Rooney v Stoke City, Oct 2012

The former Manchester United captain, Wayne Rooney created this rare record in 2012 when Manchester United was playing at home against Stoke City. With 11 minutes of the match played Rooney rose inside the United box in an attempt to clear a cross from Stoke’s Charlie Adam. However, the former England international only succeeded in diverting the ball past David De Gea in the United goal. But Wayne Rooney scored his second goal of the match in the 65th minute and helped his team win by 4-2 scoreline.

Gareth Bale v Liverpool, Nov 2012

The Welsh International created this unusual record when his side, Tottenham Hotspurs was playing at home against Liverpool in 2012. With one glorious assist, one goal at the right end, one at the wrong end and a yellow card for supposed simulation, Gareth Bale was integral to nearly everything that Tottenham did at White Hart Lane.

Gareth Bale provided a brilliant assist to Aaron Lennon in the seventh minute of the game to give Spurs a lead before doubling their advantage with a well-taken free-kick in the 16th minute. Spurs were the winning team that night by a 2-1 scoreline.

Jacob Ramsey v Man Utd, Nov 2022

Manchester United suffered a damaging 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at a lively Villa Park as Unai Emery’s side gave their new manager the best welcome possible. Cristiano Ronaldo captained United but the Portugal forward could only watch on as Villa took a quick-fire lead through Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne in the first 11 minutes. A Jacob Ramsey own goal reduced the deficit for Erik ten Hag’s team but he redeemed himself with a fine finish in the 49th minute to give Emery victory in his first match in charge of Aston Villa.

Son Heung-min v Man City, December 2023

It was a thrilling start at the Etihad as Tottenham took on the Premier League champions down nine key players. Heung-Min Son continued his outrageous form against Man City with a stunning early goal. The strike means the South Korean is the first-ever player to score away against four reigning champions. But the joy didn’t last long for those in the Spurs camp, and especially Son.

And with the own goal, he Son created more history becoming just the second player ever to get a goal and an own goal in the opening ten minutes of a game. The game ended in a 3-3 draw indeed it was a very thrilling game.
