ISL 2023-24: Borja Herrera Set to join FC Goa on loan from East Bengal

Former Hyderabad FC midfielder to replace injured Víctor Rodríguez in ongoing ISL campaign.

Borja Herrera is set to join FC Goa on loan from East Bengal, stepping in as a replacement for the injured midfielder Víctor Rodríguez. Rodríguez suffered a right leg injury during an ISL match against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in late December, prompting FC Goa to seek a capable replacement for the influential player.

After exploring various options, they have opted for Herrera, a former Hyderabad FC player who played under their current head coach, Manolo Márquez, in the ISL 2022-23 season.

East Bengal, the reigning Super Cup champions, has agreed to a short-term loan move for the Spanish midfielder. Herrera is known for his skills as a central midfielder and his prowess in an attacking role. His performances in the No.10 position have made him a key figure for both Hyderabad FC and East Bengal.

The 30-year-old is recognized for his ability to take long-range shots with precision and his powerful left foot. His knack for making late runs into the box and his vision near the goal area enhance his value as an attacking asset, especially as a substitute.

During his first season with Hyderabad FC in the Indian Super League, Herrera provided five assists and scored four goals across 22 appearances. However, his form dipped slightly at East Bengal, where he managed only two goals in 12 matches in the ISL and Kalinga Super Cup.

FC Goa, currently in pursuit of the ISL Shield title, stands second in the league table with 24 points from 10 matches, trailing Kerala Blasters by two points with two games in hand. The inclusion of Herrera is expected to bolster FC Goa’s midfield as they aim to secure the title.

The team’s next encounter will be against Hyderabad FC on February 1, 2024, when the ISL resumes after the Kalinga Super Cup and India’s participation in the AFC Asian Cup 2023. Herrera is anticipated to be available for selection in this match against his former team, adding an intriguing dynamic to the fixture.
