AFCON 2023: List of teams eliminated in group stage

Top sides such as Ghana and Algeria failed to reach AFCON 2023 last 16

For several nations competing in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2023), the dream has ended. As the group stage of the competition draws to a close, five teams have been eliminated.

The Black Stars’ disappointing AFCON 2023 campaign came to an end when they were unable to go past the round of 16 for the second consecutive year.

To move on to the next round of the tournament, Ghana needed to defeat Mozambique in their last group encounter. As the second half entered injury time, they appeared to be well on their path to accomplishing exactly that, leading 2-0.

Nevertheless, Chris Hughton’s team met with disaster as they gave up two late goals to the Mambas. Due to a draw, the Black Stars were among the four best third-placed teams in the competition and needed assistance from other teams to move forward.

For a while, it appeared that Ghana might be able to go to the round of sixteen if the game involving Gambia and Cameroon ended in a tie.

Nobody anticipated this. The 2019 winners unexpectedly crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations, placing last in Group D.

To go to the round of 16, they simply needed to draw with Mauritania in their last group encounter. But according to CAF, the Almoravids had other ideas when they won their first-ever AFCON.

Guinea-Bissau was eliminated from the competition as the bottom team in Group A.

In the AFCON this year, Djurtus lost their games against Equatorial Guinea (4-2), Nigeria (1-0), and the Ivory Coast (2-0), failing to score a single point.

The Mambas placed last in Group B, preventing them from moving on to the round of 16. They finished the competition with two points after recording two draws and one loss in the group stage.

At AFCON 2023, the Scorpions’ effort was underwhelming.

They lost every group game against Senegal, Cameroon, and Guinea at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, failing to record a single point.
