Algeria striker Amine Gouiri to miss AFCON 2023 due to injury

A big blow for Algeria and Rennes as striker Amine Gouiri has been ruled out with an injury and is set to miss the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.

Gouiri has played for Les Bleuts from the U16 level up to the U21 level. He made his U21 team debut in 2019, and since then, he has made 31 appearances and scored 12 goals.

“The years I spent in the French national team will remain with me forever,” read a statement on Gouiri’s X profile. “Thank you for everything. The time has come to start a new chapter.”

After Gouiri switched international allegiance, Algeria coach Belmadi gave an interview to l’After Foot, which was: “a secret to no one,” adding that it is already official. He said that Lamouci’s change of international allegiance is “on the right path” and that he should also be called up for the next international break.”

Djamel Belmadi has not yet announced the name of the player who will replace Amine Gouiri at CAN 2024, the final phase of which will take place from January 13 to February 11 in different cities in Ivory Coast.

The national coach could call on SCO Angers player, Himad Abdelli who is an attacking midfielder but who could swap with the young Fares Chaïbi who plays both attacking midfielder and left winger. Either way, Abdelli has been in good shape in recent weeks, even if he plays in Ligue 2 with the Angevins. 

If it is not Himad Abdelli who will replace Amine Gouiri, Belmadi could also give up on Al Gharafa (Qatar) left winger Yacine Brahimi who has completely exploded this year at club level. But it’s true that he has been at odds with the coach since his famous statement after the match against Cameroon.
