AFCON 2023 will start today in the Ivory Coast
Two continental cups, AFC Asian Cup and AFCON 2023 will be played in January. Nations from Asia and Africa will contest for continental glory.
Hosts Qatar and Lebanon played the opening game of the Asian Cup. The African Cup of Nations 2023 will also get into action when hosts Ivory Coast take on Guinea-Bissau.

AFCON 2023: Matchday 1
Match: Ivory Coast vs Guinea-Bissau (Group A)

Preview:
Hosts Ivory Coast will be in action against Guinea-Bissau in the opening match of the AFCON 2023. These two teams are a part of Group A along with Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.
Jean-Louis Gasset’s team entered the tournament after a 5-1 win over Sierra Leone in the warm-up match. The likes of Jeremy Boga, Franck Kessie, Seko Fofana, Jonathan Bamba and a few other names will lead the charge of the host nation.
Guinea-Bissau, on the other hand, lost 6-2 to Mali in an international friendly. They are the lowest-ranked team in the group and need to play their best football if they want any points from this group.

The 2015 champions of Asia, Australia, take on Igor Stimac’s India in their opening match of the 2023 edition. The Socceroos are one of the favourites to lift the tournament.
India will be eyeing an upset against a strong Australian side. The last time these two teams met in the AFC Asian Cup was in 2011. Australia won 4-0 against the Blue Tigers.
Match 2: China vs Tajikistan (Group B)

13 January 2024 at 2:30 PM (GMT); 8:00 PM (IST)

Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Stadium
Preview:
China will open their AFC Asian Cup campaign with a match against Tajikistan. Qatar have already made a perfect start to the campaign and leads Group A. China will also aim for the same outcome.
Match 3: Uzbekistan vs Syria (Group B)

13 January 2024 at 5:30 PM (GMT); 11:00 PM (IST)

Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium
Preview:
The other Group B match will see Uzbekistan taking on Syria. Both teams will be the second favourites to take the second position in the league.
Uzbekistan will carry the momentum into this game. They have won four of their last five matches and have a better rank in the FIFA standings. Syria are winless in the last three games and needs to change the momentum heading into this group match.
