A daunting task awaits the AFCON 2019 winners

Baghdad Bounedjah gave Algeria the early lead before the 20-minute mark. But the national football team conceded a 68-minute penalty which took the scoreline to 1-1. Another failed attempt at sealing a win in the Africa Cup of Nations since the 2019 final victory against Senegal. Now a tough task on matchday 2 to take on Burkina Faso.

The AFCON 2023 Group D is currently led by the Burkina Faso national football team. An added time penalty by substitute Bertrand Traoré helped secure 3 points on the table and put them in a position for the next rounds. Being at least a three-time semi-finalist in the last four tournaments, Algeria should be daunted by the prospects of facing the Stallions on matchday 2.

Kick-Off:

Saturday, 20 January 2024 at 7:30 PM IST (2:00 PM UK)

Location: Stade Bouaké

Form

Algeria (in all competitions): D-W-W-W-W

Burkina Faso (in all competitions): W-W-L-W-D

Players to Watch

Baghdad Bounedjah (Algeria)

The last time the Desert Warriors won an AFCON game was the 2019 final event. And in that game, Baghdad Bounedjah was the only scorer of the night. Once again, on matchday 1 of the 2023 AFCON, Bounedjah helped to put his side in a winning position even though they drew eventually. The 32-year-old centre forward will be an integral part of the remainder of the group stage journey.

Bertrand Traore (Burkina Faso)

Against Mauritania, the Stallions were unable to win the game without the efforts of Bertrand Traoré. Traoré was used as a substitute last time out. And came on to win the game with a late penalty goal in added time. Head coach Hubert Velud is likely to use him from the start rather later in this one.

Match Facts

  • Algeria are on an undefeated run of 13 games in all competitions
  • Burkina Faso made 3 points on matchday 1 while the Desert Warriors made just 1 point
  • The Stallions currently lead the 2023 AFCON Group D

Injury & Team News

After a lacklustre draw, Algeria head coach Djamel Belmadi should be willing to put on some stars from the very start. Few from Sofiane Feghouli, Houssem Aouar and Islam Slimani could find a place in the starting XI.

The Aston Villa star Bertrand Traoré was the only difference between a win and a draw in the Mauritania game. Traoré should be a starter to balance out the might of Algeria’s attacking prowess.

Head to Head

Total Matches – 18

Algeria wins – 7

Burkina Faso wins – 6

Draws – 5

Predicted Lineup

Algeria predicted lineup (4-2-3-1):

Mandrea (GK); Attal, Mandi, Bensebaini, Ait-Nouri; Bentaleb, Aouar; Mahrez, Bennacer, Feghouli; Bounedjah

Burkina Faso predicted lineup (4-2-3-1):

Koffi (GK); Kabore, Dayo, Tapsoda, Yago; Guira, Toure; Traoré, Ki, Badolo; Konate

Match Prediction for Algeria vs Burkina Faso

A very tough fixture for the troubled Algeria side in the AFCON tournament. Burkina Faso could prove difficult to overcome on matchday 2. But with proper tinkering of the starting lineup, the 2019 AFCON winners can snatch away a win ‘finally’.

Prediction: Algeria 2-0 Burkina Faso
