Ghana announce 27-man squad for AFCON 2023; injured Thomas Partey misses out

Ghana are eyeing their fifth AFCON title
Ghana’s head coach Chris Hughton has announced the final squad for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023. The Black Stars are a part of Group B.
After making a group stage exit in the last edition, the four-time African champions will be eyeing their fifth crown.
Ghana received a huge setback as their experienced midfielder Thomas Partey failed to make it to the final squad. Partey has been recovering from a long injury lay-off and was expected to be named in the squad to play a bit-part role in La Cote d’Ivoire.
But Chris Hughton explained that having talked to the medical staff at Arsenal, Partey will not recover in time for the tournament.
Among the other notable players to miss the tournament are Baba Rahman, Tariq Lamptey, Kamaldeen Sulemana and Edmund Addo.
Chris Hughton will count on the experience of captain Andre Ayew and the in-form West Ham United attacker Mohammed Kudus.
Returning to the squad is AS Monaco centre-back Mohammed Salisu as well as Alexander Djiku of Fenerbache.

Hughton also included three home-based players in the team. Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey and Medeama duo Fatawu Hamidu and Jonathan Sowah will travel with the squad to Ivory Coast.
Ghana made a shocking group-stage exit in 2021. They won their last AFCON in 1982. Since then, the Black Stars have missed out on three opportunities to lift the title The Ghanaian team played in the 2015 AFCON finals.

Defenders: Alidu Seidu, Denis Frimpong Odoi, Kingsley Schindler, Gideon Mensah, Abdul Fatawu Hamid, Nicholas Opoku, Daniel Amartey, Mohammed Salisu and Alexander Djiku
Midfielders: Baba Iddrisu, Elisha Owusu, Abdul Samed Salis, Richmond Lamptey, Majeed Ashimeru, Mohammed Kudus, Andre Ayew and Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer
Strikers: Osman Bukari, Joseph Paintsil, Jordan Ayew, Ernest Nuamah, Inaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo and Jonathan Sowah
