Son Heung-min has won the award a record 7 times

Bayern Munich star defender Kim Min-jae has been named South Korean Footballer of the Year (2023), the national federation KFA announced on Tuesday.

Kim Min-jae joined Bayern for €50 million in the summer of 2023 after helping Napoli win the Scudetto for the first time in 33 years. He was also named the best defender of the Italian top flight for the 2022-23 season.

In the ongoing 2023-24 season, the South Korean has been an integral part of Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern, featuring in 22 matches across all competitions, registering one goal and picking up 2 yellow cards in the process.

Kim Min-jae beat Tottenham and Premier League star Son Heung-min to win the South Korean Footballer of the Year award (2023). Son Heung-min has won a record 7 South Korean Footballer of the Year awards and was on a 4-year successive run at the award.

Kim Min-jae will now be hoping to continue his good form and help Bayern record their 12th consecutively since 2013. Bayern have also qualified for the knockout round of the UEFA Champions League 2023-24 and will face Lazio in the round of 16.

The Bayern centre-half has also been called up to South Korea’s roster for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2023. Kim will be taking part in the AFC Asian Cup (12 January – 10 February in Qatar) with the South Korean national team over the coming weeks

South Korea are one of the favourites to take the trophy home. South Korea were last in the final of the AFC Asian Cup in 2015, but unfortunately lost the final against Australia.
