Qatar and Lebanon face each other in the tournament opener

Let’s take a look at what football matches are scheduled for AFC Asian Cup 2023 today (12 January 2024).

The tournament had originally been scheduled to take place in 10 locations in primarily newly constructed stadiums in June and July of 2023, but China was selected as the host nation. But because of its zero-COVID policy and in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic, the nation gave up its hosting rights.

Due to its readiness to host the World Cup, Qatar was named the new host nation by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in October 2022. The AFC Asian Cup was held in this Middle Eastern country in 1988 and 2011.

Where is AFC Asian Cup 2023 being held?

Following the staging of the largest athletic event in history, Qatar will get another opportunity to use its FIFA World Cup stadiums. Seven of the nine event locations—Al Bayt Stadium, Education City Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Lusail Stadium, Al Janoub Arena, Khalifa International Arena, and Al Thumama Stadium—hosted the World Cup.

The home field of the local football team, Al Duhail FC, the 10,000-capacity Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium, will play host to six group games and one round-of-16 encounter. The other site not used for the World Cup that will hold Asian Cup matches is Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. The 15,000-seat stadium, which is home to Al Sadd, the most famous football team in Qatar, will be hosting six group stage matches in addition to a round-of-16 contest.

In the first phase of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, Qatar will play Lebanon at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on Friday.

This weekend, the Maroons will begin their seventh straight Asian Cup season and host the continental final for the first time since 2011. They lost to Jordan 2-1 in a friendly match on Friday, and this weekend—when it counts most—they hope to get back on track.

The Asian Cup is currently held by Qatar, who won it for the initial occasion in 2019. They will be seeking to start the defence of their championship on an upbeat note this Friday.

For the first occasion in their history, Lebanon is participating in the continental competition on consecutive days. They also played last week, going up against Saudi Arabia at the Al Janoub Stadium in a friendly match that ended in a 1-0 loss, with them giving up the game’s only goal just after the half ended.
