Top five players with 25+ direct goal contributions in Premier League in 2023

Some of the biggest names in Premier League football

The 21st century has produced a plethora of prolific goal-scorers who have scored goals galore in the biggest of competitions for club and country and have won multiple trophies. Even when they do not find the back of the net, these players present a credible threat to opponents in the attacking third because of their ability to conjure goal-scoring opportunities for teammates. Add to that their versatility which allows them to operate across a bevvy of positions in the attacking third.

When it comes to measuring the impact of an attacker, goal involvement is arguably the most straightforward yet effective metric. It gives us a clear idea of whether or not a player has managed to pull his weight in front of goal, either by scoring himself or setting up teammates. Now, without further ado, let’s take a look at five players who have been directly involved in 25+ Premier League goals in 2023:

5. Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) – 25

Bukayo Saka has 12 goal contributions in the current season

Saka is a real creative force, capable of getting into dangerous positions and playing killer final balls. He is happy on either wing but thrives when he has the freedom to move infield and into positions between the lines to receive passes. He has brilliant close control and dribbling ability, he is also adept at receiving the ball on the run and delivering crosses into the penalty area. He has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season.

4. Son Heung-min (Tottenham Hotspur) – 27

Son is a versatile player who can play in any forward position, Son is known for his two-footed ability, explosive pace, positional sense, movement, close control and clinical finishing which make him especially effective on the counter-attack. He is a very strong ball carrier who has the pace and power to attack into space and move his team through the thirds all on his own. There are few players in the Premier League that defenders are less comfortable defending against in 1v1 situations because they can attack them to the left or the right side.

3. Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) – 32

Watkins is a versatile forward comfortable withdrawing into a deeper position to link play, contesting more direct passes, and remaining in the penalty area to pose a close-range threat. Watkins has developed his skill set to be an all-around attacking threat, adding a creative playmaking side to his attacking prowess which his experiences as a winger have further enhanced. This year he has been brilliant and one of the key players for Unai Emery.

2. Erling Haaland (Manchester City) – 38

Haaland has all the attributes of a complete centre-forward. He uses his sizeable frame to hold play up effectively and involve others. He has the pace and clever movement to run in behind, he can dribble and create, and he can finish with both feet and his head. He sometimes comes so deep that defenders will not follow him. When this happens, he has the awareness to turn on the ball and create from a forward-facing position.

He uses his huge stride to sprint past opponents, and he is so fast that he often overtakes players who have had a significant head-start on him. He is constantly on the move and, as a result, he consistently tests his opponents’ concentration and stamina. Any lapse and he is more than capable of taking advantage. No doubt in 2023, he was one of the best players in the world.

1. Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) – 39

Mohamed Salah’s ability to score with both feet and his head makes him a complete forward. The overwhelming majority of his goals come from his left foot, which showcases his exceptional skill with his dominant foot. Mohamed Salah’s career goals showcase his versatility, skill, and ability to score in a variety of ways. This diversity in his goal-scoring arsenal not only makes him a formidable opponent but also a source of inspiration for aspiring footballers worldwide.

His impact as a playmaker has been particularly noticeable in recent years, where he combined both goal-scoring and playmaking at a high level. No doubt he will continue scoring and assisting for his team but as of now he seems to be unstoppable.
