Africa Cup of Nations has a very rich history
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) takes place every two years where different Nations are selected by the CAF to host the tournament. Being a host nation is tough as there’s always pressure from fans and expectations are high to deliver. But there have been teams in the past who have proved every myth wrong and enjoyed home support to the best and won the AFCON.
Here we take a look at all the countries that hosted & won AFCON in the same edition:
9. Ivory Coast
The hosts of AFCON 2023, Ivory Coast, became the latest team to win the competition on home turf. After conceding a goal in the first half, the Elephants made a comeback in the second half by scoring two goals. This was their third Africa Cup of Nations title.
8. Algeria
Algeria are one of the powerhouses of African Football. They have hosted the tournament on one occasion that too winning the tournament after beating Nigeria in the final by 1-0. This was the first time when they won the prestigious title in their history and the second being in 2019.
7. Ethiopia
Ethiopia are one of the oldest sides in the tournament. They have hosted the tournament three times once in 1962 and other two in 1968 and 1976. However, they have managed to win it once in 1962 as a host nation to make the nation proud during the time. They managed to win their first title on their first time as a host nation when they defeated United Arab Republic by 4-2.
6. South Africa
South Africa have hosted the tournament on three different occasions one in 1996 and other two in 2013 and 2022. However, they have failed to win the title on the last two times as a host nation. Their only triumph as a host nation came in 1996 when they defeated Tunisia by 2-0 to win its first ever AFCON title.

5. Nigeria
Nigeria who are a household name in the competition have hosted the event two times one in 1980 and the other on 2000. They have won the AFCON in its debut season as a host nation in 1980 when they defeated Algeria by 3-0 in the final to win its first title. However, they failed to win the title in the second occasion after loosing to Cameron in the final on penalties.
4. Tunisia
Tunisia are a regular side in the competition who have slowly made themselves one of the top sides in the Africa Contingent. Tunisia have hosted the tournament in three occasions one in 1965 and the other two in 1994 and 2004. However, they have managed to win once after defeating Morocco in the finals by 2-1 to clinch the title in 2004.
3. Sudan
Sudan have hosted the tournaments on two occasions one in 1957 and other in 1970. However, they have managed to win the title once as host nation when they defeated Ghana by 1-0 to win their first ever title. Since then they have not won a single title and have faded as a team.

2. Ghana:
One of the powerhouses in African Football, Ghana have hosted the AFCON on four occasions in 1963, 1978, 2000 and 2008. However, they have failed to win the title on two occasions. They won the AFCON in its first appearance in the competition that to as a host to defeat Sudan in the finals. Their second title as a host nation came in 1978 competition where they defeated Uganda in the final by 2-0.
1. Egypt:
Egypt are one of the most successful teams in the history of AFCON. They have won the tournament seven times. However, they have hosted the tournament five times winning just three of them. Their first triumph as a Host Nation came in 1959 where they defeated Sudan to clinch the title. In 1986, Egypt won their second title as a host nation and the final trophy came in 2006 where they defeated Ivory Coast on penalties after the game was tied on 0-0.
