Liverpool are at the top of the Premier League table

Jurgen Klopp has started playing mind games in the run-up to the Carabao Cup final, saying that Liverpool won’t be the outsiders against Chelsea.

The Reds will meet Chelsea in the sequel of the 2022 final, in which Liverpool triumphed on penalties following 120 minutes of play that finished in a goalless draw.

Liverpool are now four points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League rankings, and they are widely seen as the clear favourites to beat Chelsea again.

The Blues are now in 10th position in the standings after only winning 10 games this season—a dismal effort by their standards. Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea, though, seems to Klopp thinks might be a threat to his team beset by injuries.

Klopp told BBC Sport: “Will we be big favourites? Definitely not. Since we played them (Chelsea) they have improved a lot and it will be tricky, this was exceptional tonight.”

Pressed on whether he had any injury updates, he added: “I don’t even know if these boys can play again. The situation is not great, absolutely not… There are a lot of super important games coming up and we go day by day.”

Liverpool and Chelsea have played eight times since 2021, with Liverpool winning all of those meetings. They drew 1-1 on the opening day of the season this year, and Liverpool won the replay 4-1 last month. Chelsea easily defeated Middlesborough in the semifinals despite losing the first leg, while Liverpool barely defeated Fulham.

On Sunday, February 25, Klopp’s men will play Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final in an attempt to capture the inaugural trophy of the campaign. This will likely be Klopp’s final season leading the Merseyside team.
