This has been an iconic PL rivalry for many years

The Premier League is home to many iconic clashes such as the Manchester derby, North London Derby, London derby and many more. Besides derbies, Manchester City vs Liverpool, Liverpool vs Arsenal and especially Liverpool vs Chelsea are among such iconic matches.

Over the recent years the heated rivalry between Liverpool vs Chelsea has lessened but there are many iconic matches to look forward to. Let’s take a look at the top five greatest matches between Liverpool and Chelsea in the Premier League.

5. Chelsea 2-2 Liverpool (2nd January, 2022)

This was a great result for Chelsea since they have been in a transition phase since quite some time. Especially after winning the UEFA Champions League in 2021, majority of their squad has changed. Considering how rampant and consistent Liverpool are performing in the Premier League, a draw was essentially a win for Chelsea.

Liverpool opened the scoresheet with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah scoring a goal each. Surprisingly Chelsea made a comeback in the dying minutes of the first half.

4. Liverpool 2-2 Chelsea ( 23rd April, 2013)

Another draw between the two Premier League giants but this match was end-to-end from the very start. The main highlight of this match was Luis Suarez who was booked for a rather different reason.

Liverpool were trailing by one goal when Luis Suarez bit Branislav Ivanovic. The Uruguayan got away with a yellow card and eventually Luis Suarez made another contribution. Suarez scored a late header to secure a 2-2 draw against Chelsea in the 90th minute.

3) Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool ( 8th November, 2014)

Diego Costa was on a great run scoring 10 goals by the time Liverpool vs Chelsea was set to take place on 8th November in the 2014-15 season. Costa’s second-half goal against Liverpool ensured Chelsea’s strong title charge.

Chelsea eventually won the 2014-15 Premier League season fending off many big teams including this match. The Blues won with 86 points losing only three matches throughout the season.

2. Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea (26th October, 2008)

Xabi Alonso’s deflected strike proved to be a fatal blow to Chelsea in the 2008-09 Barclay’s Premier League season. This was not just an ordinary 1-0 victory for Liverpool, it was way more than that. This victory ensured that Liverpool were genuine title contenders in that season.

Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool without Fernando Torres ended Chelsea’s 4 year ( 86 game) unbeaten run at home in the Premier League. Liverpool dominated much of the game in terms of attack whereas Chelsea could not do much despite having more possession.

Eventually, Manchester United won the Premier League that season with Liverpool finishing second and Chelsea finishing third.

1. Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea (27th April, 2014)

This match is not just an iconic Liverpool vs Chelsea clash but one of the most iconic moments in the Premier League. Liverpool were on an 16-game unbeaten streak in the 2013-14 Premier League season. The Scousers were all set to end their long title drought in the Premier League but unfortunately skipper and legend Steven Gerrard made a mistake which haunts him to this day.

Steven Gerrard slipped after receiving a back pass and gave away the ball cheaply to Demba Ba who opened the scoresheet in the first half. Eventually, Willian scored another goal in stoppage time to secure three points for Chelsea and put a major halt in Liverpool’s title chase. In the end of that season, Manchester City won all three of their last games to win the 2013-14 Premier League. Whereas Liverpool lost this fixture against Chelsea and eventually fell short of two points to winners Manchester City.
