Gary Neville has been invited by Manchester United to assist in revitalising Old Trafford. The Times reports that Neville has received an invitation from the club to become a member of a recently formed group that will plan and make important decisions regarding the renovation of the ageing stadium and the development of the surrounding area.

Neville is amenable to the notion of taking part, provided that it does not conflict with his duties as a Sky Sports analyst.

Tuesday night saw the confirmation of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of 25% of Manchester United, and the billionaire from Petrochemicals is keen to get involved as soon as possible in all facets of the team, both on and off the pitch.

Neville has been an outspoken opponent of the Glazer family, who for the previous ten years have neglected to make improvements to Old Trafford and have neglected to invest in the club’s adjacent land.

However, the Glazers are retreating, and Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group is currently in charge of the majority of United’s operational facets.

Ratcliffe is debating whether to create a brand-new, extremely expensive stadium next to Old Trafford, as Tottenham Hotspur has done at White Hart Lane or to restore the current stadium, as Liverpool have done to Anfield in phases over the past several years.

There is potential for something akin to what Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi owners have done across town on land that is mainly underutilised. They have already spent hundreds of millions revitalising the region immediately surrounding the Etihad Stadium.

Neville currently holds a stake in the region because he co-owns University Academy 92 and Hotel Football, both of which are close by.
