Thiago Alcantara picks up muscle injury after cameo against Arsenal

The Spanish midfielder appeared for the first since April 2023

Thiago Alcantara, a midfielder for Liverpool, is apparently in line for another layoff after suffering a muscle injury during his five-minute cameo against Arsenal.

After a hip injury, the 32-year-old former Spain international played his first football game in ten months at the Emirates Stadium off the substitute’s bench.

However, The Times claims that Thiago sustained a new injury after his short appearance, which dealt the manager of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, a serious blow.

Even though Thiago’s time with Liverpool is coming to an end, Klopp intends to use the midfielder’s ability to his advantage to play in the upcoming Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup final, and Europa League.

Thiago last played for Liverpool on April 26 of last year, when they defeated West Ham 2-1 in the Premier League. That was before Sunday.

The duration of Thiago’s absence is unknown, but it comes before a crucial stretch of games for Liverpool, who lead Manchester City by two points at the top of the Premier League.

Before their matches against Brentford and Luton on Saturday, they are welcoming Burnley in an attempt to get their momentum back on pace after their defeat to Arsenal.

The Reds next visit Southampton in the FA Cup fifth stage on February 28 and play Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on February 25.

On the injured list with Thiago are attacker Mohamed Salah and colleague midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. Both of them have hamstring strains.

But Wataru Endo, a Japanese midfielder, will be back for Liverpool after they were eliminated from the Asian Cup, which will give Klopp hope.

Andy Robertson, who sustained a shoulder injury while playing for Scotland in October, may get the start he needs against Burnley since his return.

Joe Gomez might play with Virgil van Dijk in central protection, and Robertson could start at left back in place of Ibrahima Konate, who was suspended after receiving two yellow cards against Arsenal.
