The former Indian international had played for both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal and formerly worked as an advisor at ATK.

Bhaichung Bhutia has come out commending the merger of ATK and Mohun Bagan and saying that he had advised Sanjiv Goenka in the past to buy the I-League giants in the past. However, he also ascertained some apprehensions regarding the potential alteration of the colour, name and the logo of Mohun Bagan in the new combined entity.

“It's good that Mohun Bagan is getting a good buyer but I think the colour and name have to be kept and the logo. Their history is very rich. It's good that RPSG Group is buying it, they are a very professional company. But I hope that they can completely use the Mohun Bagan colour, logo and jersey. It should be maroon and green,” Bhaichung Bhutia said.

The former India international further added on that by remarking, “That (Mohun Bagan's) identity should not go. I don't think Sanjiv Goenka will do that mistake because for him buying Mohun Bagan is buying an identity. If he makes that mistake of losing that identity, that will be the biggest ever loss.”

Bhaichung Bhutia had been an advisor for ATK previously and he revealed an anecdote from the same stint. “In fact, when I was ATK's advisor I had actually first advised Sanjiv Goneka to buy out Mohun Bagan. Maybe the budget did not work out then. They were looking for investors. We had initiated the move then.”

He also heaped praise on Goenka and hinted at a fruitful partnership between both the Kolkata-based clubs. “I think Mohun Bagan have got a good owner. ATK are one of the best managed teams of the ISL right now. Sanjiv Goenka is one of the most visionary, successful corporate in India. They have got a very good corporate takeover. They are the best managed club in ISL right now. I think it's a great move for Indian football,” the 43-year-old stated.

After this merger, talks have been rife that East Bengal might follow suit and become a part of the Indian Super League. Speaking regarding the condition, Bhaichung Bhutia said, “East Bengal will also get there in a few years time. East Bengal anyway have got a corporate management (Quess). I hope the move will help and inspire.”

The RPSG group has acquired 80% stakes of Mohun Bagan in their new deal with the club. The new entity would come into existence from June 1 and would compete in the Indian Super League from next season onwards.
