Kompany is expected to be out for a significant time.
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany suffered a medical emergency, collapsing at the club’s training ground on Friday. The Belgian was reportedly treated by a medical helicopter before being taken to a hospital by ambulance.
Following medical tests, it was revealed that Kompany had been battling an illness due to a virus for several weeks. The head coach revealed that he intended to push through the illness, resulting in the collapse.
Ahead of Bayern’s match against SC Freiburg, sporting director Max Eberl spoke about Kompany’s condition, saying that the Belgian was stable and communicating.
“The good news: He’s stable,” Eberl said. “We’ve spoken. It wasn’t a pleasant moment for any of us.
“He’s in the hospital and will stay for a few days until everything has been checked out. This just goes to show that health is the most important thing in life – not football. We at Bayern Munich are all in this together.”

Vincent Kompany to be out for weeks
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
The Bayern Munich sporting director added in the press conference that more medical tests are needed to establish the cause of Kompany’s collapse and determine his recovery timeline.
“The most important thing is finding the cause. He shouldn’t come back until he’s fit. We have to protect him,” he said.
“The doctors are doing nothing but finding out what it is. Further tests are needed to determine the appropriate treatment. He is in the best hands. We can support him energetically and with love.”
Eberl, however, revealed that Kompany is expected to be out for “weeks” as he continues to recover from his illness.
“Vinnie will be given all the time he needs; we’re not setting any timeframes. We need to figure out what it is. Then we can calmly consider what the recovery time means,” Eberl said.
“We’re not talking about days, but weeks. Everyone should be clear about that. The coaching staff isn’t considering changing anything. They all have Vinnie’s spirit with them. That’s how we’ll approach the next few weeks.”
Aaron Danks takes charge
In Kompany’s absence, Bayern will be led from the touchline by assistant coach Aaron Danks. The pair previously worked together at Anderlecht before reuniting at Bayern in 2024.
Danks will take charge of his first match against Freiburg on Sunday. The club will also take on second-division Magdeburg in the DFB-Pokal. A Bundesliga derby against Borussia Dortmund will follow.
Danks is also likely to be in charge of the UEFA Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on November 3, before Bayern return to Bundesliga action against Mainz on November 7. Kompany could return following the November international break, depending on his recovery.
