European football is popular for being entertaining and highly competitive. Among others, Bundesliga is considered one of the best leagues in the continent. The league is widely known for its exciting and attacking brand of football. It houses some of the most prolific attacking players who go on to score many goals. Bayern Munich is the outright dominant club in the domestic circuit in Germany, but the record for scoring the most goals in a calendar year wasn’t theirs until recently.
The Bundesliga has a long and rich history with several clubs winning the competition in the past. While some have won it narrowly, others have bulldozed their way to lift the title. Here, the focus will be on the teams to score the highest number of goals in a calendar year and setting new goalscoring benchmarks. Until 2021, it was not Bayern Munich that was the record holder for scoring the most goals in the space of 12 months.

5. Hamburger SV (1980) - 96 goals
Hamburger SV is currently struggling in the second division but they have a very rich history. Until four years ago when they suffered relegation, Hamburger was a strong team in the league. They are, after all, a six-time Bundesliga winner and have won the UEFA Champions League once as well.
In 1980, Hamburger SV scored 96 goals, the fifth-highest mark in the league. Interestingly, the outfit finished second in both the 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons, behind Bayern Munich.
4. Bayern Munich (2019) - 98 goals
Bayern Munich has won the last nine league titles consecutively and heading towards winning it for the 10th time in a row. Their domination of the league in recent years is very apparent and the club does not look like stopping anytime soon. In 2019, the club scored 98 goals in the division, which is now the fourth-highest tally.
Robert Lewandowski was the highest goalscorer in Europe that year. The Polish striker managed 54 goals overall in 58 games across all competitions.
3. Bayern Munich (1972) - 99 goals
The Bavarians held the record for scoring the most goals in a calendar year back in 1972 after scoring 99 goals. It was broken after five years by 1.FC Koln. The year 1972 was marked by Gerd Muller’s exceptional goalscoring feats across all competitions.
The legendary striker managed a mind-boggling 85 goals in the calendar year, the second-highest number in the history of the sport. Muller scored 42 of Bayern Munich’s 99 goals in the league that year. It was a record-breaking feat that got broken at the end of 2021 by another FC Bayern striker.
2. 1. FC Koln (1977) - 101 goals
1. FC Koln were the surprise leaders until recently and the only team to score more than a century of goals in Bundesliga in a single calendar year. The outfit managed to win the league title in 1977-78, thanks to their incredible goalscoring form. They finished fifth in the standings in the previous year to winning the league.

Their mark of scoring 101 goals in Bundesliga in 12 months was recently broken by the Bavarians. Dieter Muller scored 24 goals in the 1977-78 campaign and 34 in the season prior, becoming a major figure in helping the outfit score 101 goals in the Bundesliga.
1. Bayern Munich (2021) - 116 goals
Bayern Munich finally broke 1. FC Koln’s long-standing record of scoring most Bundesliga goals in a calendar year. The outfit scored 116 goals in 2021, setting a new record in the process and cementing their dominance in the league’ goalscoring feats. They were led by an immaculate Robert Lewandowski, who also achieved a very significant feat in the process.
The Polish striker scored 43 goals in the league in 2021, finally surpassing Gerd Muller who held the record with 42 strikes. Lewandowski scored 69 goals in all competitions last year, winning the Striker of the Year award during the 2021 Ballon d'Or ceremony in the process.
