The winger is heading towards the end of his contract with Napoli which expires in June 2022.
Lorenzo Insigne is at loggerheads with SSC Napoli over his contract situation. According to reports, the club are offering an extension with a 50% pay cut, which has not gone down well with the player and his agent. Insigne has been at the club since his academy days, apart from a few loan spells here and there. The Italian is one of the most lethal attackers in Europe, let alone Serie A.
The 30-year-old Euro 2020 winner is reaching the end of his current contract, which expires in June 2022. A lot of elite clubs in Europe will be observing the situation, waiting to sign Insigne on a free transfer. Other clubs will have the chance to initiate negotiations and attempt to sign him on a pre-agreement basis.
Here are the five clubs that should target Lorenzo Insigne in the upcoming transfer window:
5. Newcastle United
Newcastle United are going to be active in the upcoming winter transfer window. The club have found new owners after a successful takeover by a consortium led by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, making them the richest club in the world. The club have the financial might and will sign quality players to challenge the bigger teams. They have already brought in Eddie Howe as their manager to guide the team to success.
Lorenzo Insigne could be a great signing for the club as he will bring lots of experience to the table. In practical terms, they will be able to offer the Italian a lucrative contract. He would be mindful that the upcoming contract could be his last major one, since he is heading towards the latter part of his career. A potential transfer benefits all parties and gives Insigne a chance to be a part of the Premier League.
4. Juventus
Juventus are reeling from the after-effects of the previous season. They lost Cristiano Ronaldo, who has returned to Manchester United in an iconic move. The Old Lady also lost their Serie A supremacy to Inter Milan, which ended their long title-winning run. In the ongoing campaign, Juventus have started really poorly, with the club sitting in eighth place, with only 18 points from 12 games.
Massimiliano Allegri has not been able to inspire the team which lacks real attacking intent. The outfit are desperate for more creativity in midfield. The arrival of Lorenzo Insigne would give the attack another outlet, as it is heavily dependent on Paulo Dybala at the moment. The Argentine is the leading goalscorer and assist-maker with three each in the Serie A. Insigne can be the perfect signing to get back to winning ways. He is someone who brings loads of Serie A experience with him.
3. FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona have emerged as an interested party in signing Lorenzo Insigne. The La Liga club are going through a tough transitional phase. There have been major changes and the club are still coming to terms with the departure of legend Lionel Messi. After Ronald Koeman's nightmare run, he has now been replaced by Xavi as the manager.
The former player had a successful stint with Qatari club Al-Sadd and has come to Spain to steady the ship. Hence, one can expect the Blaugrana to make several new additions and Insigne is on the list. Insigne is quick and his style of play is similar to the kind of attackers FC Barcelona are famous for. Furthermore, considering the financial troubles ailing FCB, a free transfer makes so much more sense for a player like Insigne.
2. Inter Milan
Inter Milan have a huge challenge in front of them as the defending champions of Serie A. Several key figures have departed the club from last season such as Antonio Conte, Romelu Lukaku, Achraf Hakimi and more. One of their main creative figures in Christian Eriksen is also unavailable after suffering a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020.
In this situation, the club are desperately trying to stay in contention with an inferior squad compared to last term. The Nerazzurri will be looking to sign Lorenzo Insigne as it will provide them with a player who understands Serie A inside out. Moreover, signing a player of his quality from a direct rival will be like hitting two birds with one stone.
1. Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur are also going to be on the lookout for new signings in the upcoming winter transfer window. The Premier League outfit had a rocky start to their season under Nuno Espirito Santo. However, the club have now replaced him with none other than Antonio Conte.
The Italian manager knows Lorenzo Insigne well, having previously worked with him at the Italian national team. The winger could be the focal point of a Spurs attacking unit which also consists of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. Spurs will be able to offer the Italian lucrative wages and the opportunity to play in the Premier League, which involves the best talent from the world of football.
