Five clubs with the most yellow cards in a single Premier League season

A new record was set for the most yellow cards in a season.
The Premier League is a competitive and feisty league. Football in England is physical and quite intense. On some occasions, players can get reckless with their tackling and receive yellow cards. Furthermore, the physical nature of the league sees a lot of challenges flying in from both teams in a match.
There are also many rivalries and derby fixtures to consider. These matches are particularly heated encounters. During such games, yellow cards are shown aplenty. Some clubs, as a result, collect a lot of yellow cards.
As a matter of fact, the record for most yellow cards received by a club was very recently broken. The below five clubs are the top-five teams to collect the most yellow cards in a single Premier League campaign:
5. Arsenal - 86
Arsenal, very recently, collected 86 yellow cards. They did so during the 2019-20 edition of the Premier League. The Gunners did not have a strong disciplinary record under Mikel Arteta.
Granit Xhaka was the recipient of the highest number of yellow cards for a single player. He got 10 yellows from 31 appearances. Arsenal missed out on the UEFA Champions League qualification this season after finishing eighth.
4. Everton - 91

Everton is next on the list with a whopping 91 yellow cards during the 1998-99 season. The Merseyside outfit were record holders for most yellow cards received by a team in one Premier League campaign at the time.
Olivier Dacourt finished the season with 13 yellow cards, the most in the division. Don Hutchinson of EFC also finished with nine yellows.
3. Derby County - 93
Derby County broke Everton’s record set in the previous season to finish with 93 yellow cards at the end of the 1999-00 campaign. Seth Johnson was the recipient of 13 yellow cards and his teammate Horacio Carbonari was booked 10 times.
Derby County did avoid the relegation by five points during that campaign, despite the disciplinary record.
2. Sunderland - 94

Sunderland is second in receiving the most number of yellow cards in a single Premier League season. Until recently, they had the worst disciplinary record for a club with 94 yellow cards during the 2014-15 season.
The outfit avoided the drop for the season but finished in 16th place. Lee Cattermole ended the season with 14 bookings while Sebastian Larsson received 11 yellow cards. However, the club went down into the second division after relegating during the 2016-17 season.
1. Leeds United - 97*
Leeds United has broken the record for receiving the most number of yellow cards in a single PL campaign. Their total tally for the 2021-22 season reached 97 after 36 matches. As things stand, they could breach the 100-mark and become the first-ever club to get more than a century of yellow cards in a single season.
Junior Firpo leads the team with 10 yellow cards. The club is close to losing its Premier League status and could face relegation. It must turn things around and stop its players from getting in the referee’s book.
