East Bengal FC's AFC Champions League Two Rival Watch: Al-Shorta

East Bengal will face Group Leaders Al-Shorta SC in Match 2 in AFC Champions League 2

East Bengal FC will face group D leaders Al-Shorta SC after settling for a draw in match week 1 of AFC Champions League Two against Al Hussein.

East Bengal’s first continental home night in over a decade arrives with some logistical noise. The fixture falls close to Durga Puja, and security concerns raised before the tournament put the Salt Lake staging in question.

The domestic champions have been handed a stage they haven’t occupied for a long time. This is their ninth appearance in an AFC group stage and their first since 2015, when the competition was still called the AFC Cup.

The stakes are structural as the top two in each four-team group advance to the Round of 16. East Bengal opened with a 2-2 draw with Al Hussein, so they are on one point. Their remaining home games are against the Omani and Jordanian sides Al-Shorta & Al-Seeb respectively. They will travel to Baghdad on 8 December. Dropping points here would leave them chasing the group before the halfway mark.

Al-Shorta are among Iraq’s most successful clubs, with eight league titles. They have also played in the AFC Champions League Elite in each of the last two editions. That tournament hasn’t treated them kindly, but it has given them a depth of continental experience that East Bengal’s squad can’t match as a group.

Al-Shorta won their first match in the AFC Champions League Two, 1-0 against Al-Seeb.

Al-Shorta come in leading Group D. They beat Al Seeb 1-0 in Baghdad, with Hussein al Saedi scoring in the 51st minute from a Cristian Barco delivery.

The result was less comfortable than the scoreline suggests. Seeb defended in a compact block and conceded possession, and the breakthrough came only after Al-Shorta raised their ball speed and widened the pitch in the second half. A side that needs 51 minutes to crack a low block is vulnerable to a patient, deep-sitting opponent.

Whether East Bengal want to play that way at home is a separate question. The domestic numbers point in the same direction. In the league, they are fifth after nine games, with four wins, four draws and one defeat. They have scored nine goals and conceded four, for 16 points.

That is a goal a game from a squad that scored 70 goals in 38 matches last season, a campaign that ended in second place. The defence is sound, but the attack has lost its edge, and four draws in nine suggests they struggle to turn control into wins.

The emotional context also matters. Last season’s runners-up finish was behind Al Quwa Al Jawiya, and the club changed coach over the summer. Their last two Elite campaigns ended below the knockout line, so a path to the Round of 16 here is a way to recover standing.

Who is Al-Shorta’s Head Coach?

Sami Trabelsi is the club’s third coach in recent memory, and he came in with a narrow brief. Al-Shorta announced him as head coach on a one-season deal, specifically to lead them in this competition.

He is a Tunisian with a long national-team record. He has had two separate spells in charge of Tunisia and has also coached Qatar’s Al-Sailiya, where he managed the club for a decade. The pattern across those jobs is a pragmatic, structured coach who is used to short-term assignments.

His tactical identity is a 4-3-3 built on controlled possession, wide width and rapid ball circulation. The Seeb performance bore that out. The principles were clear: patient build-up, fast circulation in the second half and stretching the pitch to open channels.

What it didn’t show is how he handles a transitional game, because Al-Seeb gave him no space to attack. Against an East Bengal side likely to play with more intent, that question gets a real answer.

Players to Watch

Mohanad Ali (striker)

Mohanad Ali played for Iraq in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 26-year-old returns to Al-Shorta after a season in the UAE First Division. At Dibba he scored six goals in 20 appearances, a thin return, while his earlier Al-Shorta spell was far more productive. He is an Iraq international and the team’s most direct goal threat. Given Al-Shorta’s low goal count, his sharpness is the central question for them. If he rediscovers his old form in Kolkata, East Bengal’s back line will face the toughest test of its group stage so far.

Cristian Barco (midfielder)

The Argentine joined from Erbil, where he scored five goals and provided six assists in 23 games. He is the creative centre of the side: the delivery for the winner against Al-Seeb was his. His value is in the final-third pass rather than in carrying the ball. East Bengal’s holding midfielders need to cut his supply lines, because if he gets time on the ball the winger and the striker will get service.

Diego Hernández (centre-back)

The Colombian arrived from Rionegro Águilas on a one-season loan. He has no history in Asian football and is adapting to a new league while holding the heart of a possession-based defence. If East Bengal can get their forwards into duels with him early, they test the part of Al-Shorta’s spine that is newest to this environment. He is worth watching on balls in behind.

When is East Bengal FC’s next AFC Champions League Two match?

East Bengal FC will host 8 time Iraq champions Al-Shorta at the VYBK in Kolkata. The match will be on 13th October, 2026, scheduled to start at 7:15 PM IST.

Who is top of East Bengal FC’s AFC Champions League Two group?

The AFC Champions League Two group D is lead by Al-Shorta with 3 points & 1 win. East Bengal follow closely second with 1 point & 1 draw.
