AFC Champions League Two 2026-27 Key Battles: Al-Hussein vs East Bengal

East Bengal will begin their AFC Champions League Two campaign against Al-Hussein.

East Bengal FC are poised to kick off their 2026-27 AFC Champions League Two campaign with a tricky clash, when they face Jordan heavyweights Al-Hussein on Wednesday (16 September 2026). It’ll be the first of what are sure to be plenty of challenging tests for Antonio Habas’ side in the continental competition this season, with the Torchbearers aiming to make Indian football proud by prospering in the competition.

For East Bengal, the clash against Al-Hussein will be an intense one as they are facing their opponents in an unfamiliar environment at the Amman International Stadium.

Coming fresh off their win at the 2026 Durand Cup final against rivals Mohun Bagan SG, the Red & Gold Brigade seem to have some positive momentum on their side but will be facing the defending Jordan Pro League champions – who are themselves revved up for a big performance to kick off their Asian campaign.

The Al-Hussein vs East Bengal clash should be a feisty one with many notable battles happening on the pitch. However, there are only a few key battles that will decide the end result and which side ends up dominating the proceedings during the match.

Here, we look at the three key battles to watch during the Al-Hussein vs East Bengal clash.

3. Mohammed Rashid vs Yousef Qashi

For East Bengal to be able to hold their own against Al-Hussein, they will need to succeed in the midfield battle and not allow the hosts to control the game.

As a result, their skipper Mohammed Rashid needs to be a highly proactive figure in the midfield – closing down spaces for opposition players to make forward passes, pressing them smartly and regaining possession in the key areas.

The Palestinian midfielder, however, will be facing a stiff test against Al-Hussein midfielder Yousef Qashi. The 21-year-old, who is a product of the FC Bayern Munich academy, who definitely has lots of tricks up his sleeve to be a thorn in the midfield.

Qashi will aim to be a nightmare for the East Bengal players with his forward runs in the midfield, as well as help his side control the game in dominant fashion.

The battle between Rashid and Qashi should be an eye-catching one because both players like to control key spaces in the midfield, and can be energetic enough to trouble the opposition midfielders.

Whoever ends up getting the advantage in this battle will probably end up providing a huge boost for their side’s chances of winning this clash.

2. Brayan Riascos vs Anwar Ali

East Bengal should expect to face a range of onslaught on their goal in the game against Al-Hussein, who will be amped up to produce an entertaining display in front of their fans.

The Torchbearers will have to hold together a really sturdy defensive shape and can only do so if their inspired centre-back Anwar Ali is at his best. The India international has another chance to prove his quality against foreign opposition and will look to be an effective figure in the backline, getting into the key spaces to make crucial challenges and clearances.

However, the East Bengal defender can expect to face a tough challenge against Colombian forward Brayan Riascos, who is expected to lead the frontline for the Jordan champions. The 31-year-old was roped in by Al-Hussein before the 2026-27 season to boost their attack before the start of the Asian competition and he’ll look to make good use of his experience against East Bengal.

Riascos will try to be a menace in the final third, nailing his off-the-ball runs to get past his marker and put away chances effectively.

That is why Anwar has a big challenge in front of him to stay close to the Colombian forward, neutralizing his goal-scoring threat and ensuring that he doesn’t get any major chances inside the box at all.

1. Chris Ikonomidis vs Ahmad Assaf

As Chris Ikonomidis is likely to be the only foreign attacking player for East Bengal to start in the Al-Hussein clash, there will be a lot of pressure on the Australian forward to prove his quality for the Kolkata giants.

Ikonomidis was able to produce a few decent performances in East Bengal’s Durand Cup campaign, but it is high time that he taps into his absolute best in the upcoming ACL Two clash. The Australian forward has arrived at East Bengal with a lot of experience, and has played in the ACL Two in the past as well.

The 31-year-old forward, however, can expect to face Al-Hussein full-back Ahmad Assaf in this upcoming clash.

Assaf played many years in Europe before joining Al-Hussein in 2025, with the full-back also having decent experience of playing in the Asian competition.

The 27-year-old will need to be a positive influence on the right side for his team, needing to cover a lot of ground and be accurate with his tackling to be able to frustrate the East Bengal forward.

For Ikonomidis, the challenge is to be unpredictable with his forward runs to get the ball into the danger zones. He’ll also have to be clinical in finishing any chances that come his way and decisive with his final passes to raise East Bengal’s attacking threat and help them get a positive result in Jordan.
